2014 School Magazine

Health and Physical Education has been very busy this year with a variety of sports and engaging topics to keep Year 10s entertained and informed. In the theoretical component, we completed many interesting and important topics including St John Ambulance First Aid, biomechanics, and drugs and alcohol education. In these units we were provided information that was not only useful in the classroom, but also vital in everyday life. For the physical component, we participated in a range of different sports and activities. We did lifesaving, touch football, basketball, volleyball and sports aerobics. I really enjoyed the subject this year due to the range of activities available for me to participate in with my classmates. SARAH MILLER (10E) Health Studies

INSPIRATIONAL OLD GIRL SARAH TISDALL (11O)

In mid-October, the Year 11 senior Physical Education cohort was privileged to have an audience with old girl Ms Hilda Reid (1941). Ms Reid, along with co-founder Ms Kathleen Atherton, was a foundation member of the McLeod Country Golf Club at Mt Ommaney. The Club was the first — and remains the only — golf club in the southern hemisphere managed by female members. The Club was founded in 1968 at a time when women were relegated to inconvenient tee-off times and were excluded from weekend play. Ms Reid delighted us with stories of the development of the Club and we all listened intently as she outlined the many challenges she faced in realising her dream. We have been able to apply the knowledge we acquired studying sports sociology to develop a better understanding of these challenges, and in doing so, have found ourselves a new inspiration in Hilda Reid. ■ WOMEN IN SPORT This year’s Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Women In Sport Breakfast was held at the Brisbane Convention Centre in October and was attended by Year 11 and 12 students. With sixty staff and students amongst the crowd of 700, Girls Grammar was the school with the most attendees at the breakfast. We enjoyed listening to three elite athletes: Holly Fielding (Australian Cricketer), Courtney Hancock (Ironwoman), and Cate Campbell (Olympic Swimmer) as they outlined their sporting achievements and the many sacrifices they have had to make along the way. It was an inspirational morning and we felt very lucky to be present at an event initiated by Mrs Harvey-Short in 1991. ■ BREAKFAST HARRIET GLEED (11E)

LIFESAVING CAMP CAITLIN HOCKINGS (12W)

As part of the senior lifesaving unit at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, forty-six Year 12 Senior Physical Education students participated in a three-day lifesaving camp. This involved performing a series of life-like rescues in Yabba Creek, located near our Marrapatta Memorial Outdoor Education Centre. With the aid of twelve fourth year UQ Physical Education students, the camp was aimed to create a unique and challenging environment to implement theoretical knowledge in practical situations. The girls left the lifesaving camp knowing they exceeded their personal boundaries and can more than capably react in emergency lifesaving situations. Through this subject the students qualified for the Royal Lifesaving Bronze Cross. ■
