LAMENT' OF A MONIT'RESS. It's early lesson time And there isn't any chalk, Ev'ry time I get some more It must grow legs and walk ! Who's been drawing on the black-board? And what's this on the floor? Did anyone think to bring flowers? Or don't they grow any more? Now if we straighten up these desks, And clean that chalky duster, Although it won't bear close scrutiny The room may just pass muster.

THE BROOK.

It babbles into shady corners, In and out And round about, Running over milk-white pebbles . It clinks against the stotly side And r ises in a swirling tide. The willow dips And sways its tips As the ghost-like wind creeps rustling Through the waving sheaves of wheat. It opens into marshy lakes Where fishes leap And great birds sweep Up and down, o'er the lapping ripples. In among ihe tall bullrushes, And into the moss-clad, quiet nooks Of the shimmering glittering Brook. While cool dark ·shadows Move across the meadows,
