Miss Kathle en Lyons has been spending a short holiday in Brisbane. It was a disappointment to many Old Girls that, although she is very much better, she did not feel equal to the strain of formal entertaining and it was not possible for the Association to arrange any functions in her honour. Those who were fortunate enough to see her were glad to find that she has still the same keen interest in the School and the Old Girls. We, hope that she has benefited by the restful time she spent, and that she will return next year. Two energetic members of last years' committees have left Brisbane in ihe last few months. Mrs . T. Beneke (Mollie Groom) has gone to live in Rockhamp- ton, whence she wri tes to say that she is enjoying her life there. She should meet several other Old Girls there, amongst them Mrs. R. H. Miller (Mavis MacFarlane) and Mrs . T. McLaughlan [Belle Knauer) . Mrs . H. McKechnie (Glen Jew ell) is now in Adelaide. At the time of her last letter, she had just found a house-, near the Bay, and was exceedingly busy with problems of furnishing. She has interesting things to say of the differences between the prices of Ball tickets here and in Adelaide, a subject on which her e·xperience as Treasurer of last year's Ball, enables her to speak w ith authority. Miss Jessie Stephenson who for many years was the very e.fficient Secretary-Treasurer of the Association, has completed her Accountancy Finals. Miss Edna Hill has been appointed Director of the· Lady Gowrie Pre- School Centre, a very responsible position, on which we congratulate her. Miss Nan Scott-White is one of her assistants. Miss Jean Collins who was in the same form at School, has gone off to Perth to take up a similar position there . Miss Ruth Fielding is on the staff of the Canberra Church of England Grammar School. Her aunt, Mrs . V. Greenhalgh. who will be remembered as a very enthusiastic Old Girl, a former member of the· School ·staff, and the First President of the Senior Group, is a lso living in Canberra. Miss Ethel HolyoakJe who was elected to the O.G.A. committee this year, had to re·sign her position as she' has gone to live in New Zealand for some time. Miss Vera Schubert was recently registered as a member of the Queens· land Institute of Architects . After passing her Junior Examination in 1931, she spent two ye-ars in the Art School of the Central Technical College, Brisbane, obtaining certificates for all subjects included in the course. She then entered the Architectural course, and' passed her Finals in 1939. Miss Jean Hamilton again won the first prize at the Creche and Kinder- garten Floral Festival, for the best floral device (judged for originali ty of de- sign and general effect). This is the fifth year running that she has carried off this prize. Miss Beryl Hinckley is still in Bristol and is doing well with her medical course there. Mrs . R. J. H. Risson is exceedingly busy in her work as Commander of the W;omen's Air Training Cor:ps . This Corps is doing the very valuable work of training women to replace men as assistants to the ground staffs of aerodromes. Old Girls are, as usual, well represented on the various stude-nts committees at the University, and Miss Ethel Carson is the President of the Women Students' Club. The Women of the University's War Work Group also contains many energetic Old Girls, its Assistant Secretary being Miss L. Silcock. 36
