believe, worships the refrigerator, for all the time that he deigns to spend at home, is passed sitting in front of its magical door, that to him spells meat There he sits successfully getting in everybody's way, ears laid back, a reproachful look in his eyes, and quivering indignation plainly showing in the humped line of his back. Dolefully he meows, at intervals of more or less two seconds each. Once, when the refrigerator had to be taken away for some repairs, poor Gimmel nearly went mad. He ran in a bewildered and dreary way all round the vacant refrigerator recess, meowing drearily and inces- santly. The most cheerful picture that I keep in mind of our four cats, however, is the tableau of peaceful domesticity, created by them in the winter time, when, each in his appointed basket, it attitudes of luxuriant abandonment, sensual indolence ex- pressed in every line of their bodies, they purr before the open fire in our sitting room. -U.K. & J.A., V. Their deepness spreads ' ih: graceful fingers Sweeping against the sky, and stenclliecffine. · The joy of other worlds makes all the distance bright W ith rosy mists, that touch the earth's far rim; For gladness shines in · glory .froin transparent light And rises like a swee!, un~arthly hymn. .
