QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS (QAMT) YEAR 7/8 MATHS QUIZ

On 21 August 2017, Vivian Wang (8L), Samantha Tang (8L), Jaqueline Yen (8H), Sandra Jiang (7W), Kai Hughes (7L), Abigail Woodcock (7W) and Yvonne Wang (7W) participated in the QAMT Year 7/8 Maths Quiz which took place at St Joseph’s College. There were five different sections in the quiz and in each of them we had to use our different mathematical skills. The sections were: estimation, individual short answer, speed, problem solving and general knowledge. The afternoon was fun and rewarding. We found that some of the questions were quite challenging. Overall, we are very glad to be able to say we competed in this competition as the afternoon was very enjoyable. ABIGAIL WOODCOCK (7W) AND YVONNE WANG (7W) AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION This year, a group of keen Maths students from Years 7 to 12 participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition held on Thursday 27 July. Students in Year 7 and Years 9 to 12 nominated to participate in the competition rather than being automatically registered. The competition was 75 minutes long and consisted of a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. We found the problems stimulating and interesting. It was a great opportunity to test the application of essential mathematics knowledge to unfamiliar problems, and to further develop our problem-solving skills under test conditions. If you enjoy solving challenging maths questions, or you want to improve your problem-solving skills, we highly recommend and encourage students to participate next year. SENIOR MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD

I think that the skills developed from my previous participation in a variety of maths competitions gave me the insight needed to cope with such a challenging and demanding competition. I doubt I could have ever been recognised by the Australian Mathematics Trust without the support of the School, allowing me to develop my problem-solving skills through endless opportunities presented to students. I also sincerely thank Mrs Mazzaglia, Mrs Muller, and Dr Jenkins for helping me participate in the competition. Though it was tough, I highly recommend this experience for anyone who is able to participate in it — it is an opportunity not to be missed. YUWEN GUO (10M)

It really was a huge privilege for me to participate in the Senior Mathematics Olympiad. This is a four-hour, invitation-only competition consisting of five questions. Thirty Queensland students are chosen by the Australian Mathematics Trust to participate in half a year of consistent training. The preparation programme offered by the Australian Mathematics Trust was a lot of fun. We attended training sessions, with the instructors, Dr Brenton Gray and Dr Alan Offer, meeting students who came from places such as the Gold Coast and Townsville. The instructors encouraged everyone to have a go at the seemingly impossible problems. They also taught us many ways to tackle a maths problem.
