THE MITTELHEUSER INTERNSHIP IS A NEWLY ESTABLISHED PROGRAMME GIVING YEAR 10 AND 11 STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE AT STATE LIBRARY OF QUEENSLAND.

The interns also completed the library’s Budding Historian Module, giving them the opportunity to choose an aspect of Queensland history to research and write a blog article about for the John Oxley Library blog portal. In its first year, the Mittelheuser Student Internship Programme was open to three pilot schools: Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Brisbane Grammar School and Brisbane State High School. Eliza and Caitlin were encouraged by their Year 11 history teacher, Ms Alison Dare to apply for the programme in 2016. Applications for the 2017 internship programme will open in term two. The internship was set up with a generous donation by Brisbane Girls Grammar School Alumna (Class of 1949) and long-time supporter of the arts including the Queensland Library Foundation, Dr Cathryn Mittelheuser AM. In this inaugural year, two Girls Grammar students, Eliza Woods (11O) and Caitlin Trout (11B) were chosen to undertake five-day internships during the winter school holidays. Eliza and Caitlin were mentored by State Library staff in a range of professional activities including research, curation and conservation. Both history buffs, the girls spent two days with the Queensland Memory team, learning about the work of the John Oxley Library — the State Library’s repository of Queensland history. They also spent two days looking at how State Library uses social media to share its collection, and a day looking at how it preserves the collection.
