$clencffi and ffingir"]*#rfrng f;hmillenge 2#14 In March, thirty-two Girls Grammar students competed in the Science and Engineering Challenge, hosted by The Universrty of Oueensland in conjunction with the University of Newcastle. Girls competed in teams of four in eight different categories - ElectraCity, FIelter Skelter Shelter, Who Gets the Water?, Stringways, Eco-Flabitech, Mission to Mars, Calapult and Bridge Building. The team flnished with a very ciose overall second place, with commendable performances noted by the winners of the catapult section Victorra Knight (10G), Molly Pate (10G), Ehzabeth Perrin (10F{) and Anna Ruddell (10O) and the second placed bridge builders Adete Bhasin (10L), Elizabeth Chai (10E), Alexandria DiMichele (10E) and Isobel Smith (10B) Prctured right. Abigail Ashford (9R) participaled rn this year's Scrence and Engineering Challenge.
Mathapatta Early in May, twenty-eight Year 9 and 10 students attended Mathapatta 201.4 (an overnight camp at Marrapatta) to enjoy the rigour and challenge of extended mathematical pursuits. Mr Andrew Lanning, Mrs Judith Muller and Ms Emily Walsh led the curious and attentive students through various sessrons that explored beyond the mathematics curriculum. Indoor sessions included 'The Motion of the Ocean', 'Linear and Nonlinear Functions', 'Combinatorics', 'The Proof is in the Proving', 'Geomagic Squares' and 'Introduction to Programming', while the outdoor mathematical modelling sessions 'Human Pendulums' and 'Whirlybirds' had the students swinging mid- air to collect data and experimenting to determine how wing length affects flight time.

2Ot4 Maths Team Challenge Competition was fierce between the 61 competing teams atlhe 2014 Metropolitan West Maths Team Challenge. Solving complex mathematical problems, our Brisbane Girls Grammar teams competed commendably with a Junior Divisron team of Carmen Zhu (10R), Katrina Xiao (10W), Alisha Tang (10W), Adeline Chan (9L) and Abirami Somasundaram (9M) performing strongly to place second and a Senior Team consrsting of Sivagowri Somasundaram (12M), Serena Edwards (12E), Rene Arunakumaren(1.28), Shiye Su (11R), and Caitlin Philp (11R) placing third.
