DR JOHN LOCKHART GIBSON CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1929 – 1939

An ophthalmologist, educated at Ipswich Grammar School and the University of Edinburgh where he won first-class honours and a gold medal; he later studied in Vienna, Berlin and London. Gibson joined the Australian Imperial Force on 1 May 1915. As a major that year he was in charge of the ophthalmic department of the 3rd Australian General Hospital on Lemnos. On his return to Australia he became a leading eye specialist at the Children’s Hospital and with the Repatriation Department in Queensland. He was a strong supporter of the Grammar Schools and a senator of the University of Queensland.

MR JOHN E. ENGLAND CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1952 – 1961

Mr England was a member of the Board of Trustees from May 1937 to July 1963 and Chair for nine of those years. A quiet and dignified man, England served on the Board during the time of Miss Lilley and supported Miss Crooks (later Mrs McDonald) when she assumed the position of Headmistress in 1952. His family had a long association with the Grammar Schools. He and his son attended Brisbane Grammar School; his sisters and daughters attended Brisbane Girls Grammar School and his elder daughter, Mary, was a member of the staff, more recently his grandchildren also attended.

DR KONRAD HIRSCHFELD CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1961 – 1976

Educated at Brisbane Grammar School Konrad Hirschfeld won an open Scholarship to The University of Queensland in 1924. He was Queensland’s Rhodes Scholar in 1927 and graduated in medicine in London in 1929 and obtained his M.A. with first class honours at Oxford in 1930. His return to Australia coincided with the outbreak of World War II. Hirschfeld became a surgeon specialist in the Wartime Army. In the following years, he enjoyed a long, illustrious and energetic career as a surgeon, lecturer and examiner. Dr Konrad Hirschfeld was appointed a trustee of the School in 1947 and later chair. The Hirschfeld association with the School did not end with his retirement. His daughter, Adjunct Professor Mary Mahoney is currently Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees and his granddaughter Caitlin Goss became the School’s third Rhodes Scholar in 2009.
