In 2001 a group of Year 10 German students from Brisbane Girls Grammar and Brisbane Grammar Schools initiated an early Christmas celebration for the ladies resident in the Neilson Home at Chelmer, singing a number of well known carols in German and English. At the end of the concert the student choir mingled with the audience sharing good will and it was on this first occasion that one of the residents mentioned a connection with Brisbane Girls Grammar. Pamela Marshall nee Eadie attended the School between 1928 and 1931 and to the What forges the bonds within our Grammar community can occur in quite unexpected and pleasantly surprising ways. Looking Ahead Michelle Leeke (2006) was awarded the Corporate Partners In Excellence (CPIE) scholarship at Queensland University of Technology this year. The scholarship enables students to study QUT Bachelor of Business majoring in Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Economics or Marketing. The selection is made on a competitive basis and criteria included academic achievement, a written application which detailed community involvement, achievements, aspirations and goals, and a personal interview. Michelle is currently studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting and Banking and Finance. In her last year at Brisbane Girls Grammar School she participated in the QUT Accounting Schools Programme, which allows students to complete a first year university subject while simultaneously completing their Alumni & Art Victorian alumni joined Ms Bell, Miss Williams and Mrs McConaghy to view the Australian Impressionism exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria’s Ian Potter Gallery, Federation Square. They also enjoyed a private information lecture and afternoon tea at Bokchoy Tang restaurant.

In 2003, by happy coincidence, the choir was present on the occasion of Mrs Marshall’s 90th birthday and was able to offer their congratulations and good wishes. The Christmas visit to the Neilson Home continues to be an annual event and it is always a pleasure for each new group of students to meet and talk with Mrs Marshall and maintain this special connection.
Five Year Reunion
The School welcomed back more than 70 girls from the Class of 2002 when it hosted a cocktail party to celebrate the cohort’s five year reunion. The event was also attended by several members of the academic staff.
studies at school. “Attending a few lectures and actually sitting the exams with other university students on the campus provided me with a good insight to uni life and how it differed from school,” said Michelle. Michelle was encouraged to apply for the scholarship by her cousin, Stacey Jackson, also a past student of Girls Grammar, who received a QUT scholarship the year before. Postscript: Scholarships for university study are handled through the office of the Director of Post Secondary Planning. Year 12 students are regularly notified of scholarship opportunities through a direct email link and many girls apply. In 2006, 9 students won scholarships to tertiary institutions across the country and, in 2007, 7 students were honoured in the same way.
Sixty Year Reunion
Over 20 past students from the class of 1947 reconnected at the reunion held in the Creative Learning Centre. Impressed by the School’s new facilities several women commented on the good fortune of today’s Grammar girls.
