DR ALISSA WALSH (1992) MBBS (Hons), The University of Queensland Currently undertaking a DPhil at Oxford University

GASTROENTEROLOGIST

SECOND VIOLIN, AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET

AFTER FINISHING HER DEGREE, FRANCESCA MOVED TO MELBOURNE TO ATTEND THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC. WHILE THERE, SHE CO-FOUNDED A STRING QUARTET CALLED THE AURIC QUARTET AND SUCCESSFULLY AUDITIONED FOR THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. SHE COMMENCED WITH THE AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET IN 2016. ‘I was lucky enough to have teachers — especially the music staff — who made me feel like I was already an adult professional. In Year 11, a few of us were invited to Government House to watch a concert given by the Australian String Quartet. It was certainly an experience that made an impression — it was my dream job which is now bizarrely a reality!’

ALISSA IS A LEADER IN THE TREATMENT OF CROHN’S DISEASE AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS. SHE COMPLETED HER SPECIALTY TRAINING IN GASTROENTEROLOGY AND SUBSEQUENTLY COMPLETED A FELLOWSHIP AT THE JOHN RADCLIFFE HOSPITAL IN OXFORD IN 2007-8. ‘Girls Grammar taught me the importance of hard work, discipline and the rewards that come from these qualities. These are values that have defined and continue to define my professional life. In my year there were many girls who went on to study medicine — this “high achiever” environment is challenging but ultimately drove me to work hard and succeed.’

PURCHASE YOUR PIECE OF GIRLS GRAMMAR HISTORY

Fine art prints of ‘Brisbane Girls Grammar School’, a beautiful oil on linen canvas painting by artist and old girl Jan Jorgensen (Goeldner, 1960) are now available for purchase. Mrs Jorgensen has generously agreed to donate twenty per cent of proceeds from the sales to the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Bursary Fund.
