CENTRAL STATION
T HE REFURBISHMENT OF THE KATHLEEN LILLEY BUILDING AT THE HEART OF THE SPRING HILL CAMPUS HAS CREATED A CENTRAL HUB WHICH ENCOURAGES ENHANCED STUDENT ACCESS TO TEACHERS.
The Dean of Curriculum and Scholarship, Dean of Studies and Learning Analytics, Dean of Academic Administration and Director of Post-Secondary Planning and Academic Support also benefit from residing in the one building as they share commonalities in their support of students and staff. Facilities include an administration assistance area, a teacher/student interface built along the front of the building, two refurbished classrooms, three new meeting rooms, staffrooms and lunchrooms and new toilets and showers. Architecture firm, m3architecture — who previously designed the RLC and award-winning Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centere —were responsible for the overall design but each faculty space was driven by the faculty themselves. Facilities Manager Mr Aaron Bowden said faculty staff had strong input into the design of their areas as they decided how the space would best suit their needs, considering factors such as how team members like to work, adequate storage and appropriate shelving space. As assignment delivery system was also developed and implemented for each faculty which consists of a piece of joinery with collection boxes for individual classes to make the submission and collection of assignments more efficient for both students and teachers, especially during peak assessment periods.
Following the relocation of the library to the Research Learning Centre (RLC) last year, various proposals considered what should be done with the space left vacant. After careful deliberation, it was decided an academic hub for senior staff, teachers and students would be the most effective use of the space. With works beginning in October last year, the refurbished building welcomed its new tenants at the start of the school year in January. The English and Humanities faculties are now co-located in this building, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and a culture of inclusion and integration.
