Students finalists in national film competition

Girls Grammar has a long established connection to the Second Chance Programme, an organisation dedicated to ending homelessness for local women. The School’s Second Chance Committee members, Gillian Angliss and Emma Nicol, created a short film for the 2011 Oasis National Youth Homelessness Film Competition. The annual competition aims to raise awareness about youth homelessness and encourage young people to engage with their local community on the issue. Out of hundreds of entries from schools around the Australia, Gillian and Emma’s short film was chosen as one of just sixteen finalists. A special event was held at the Sydney Theatre Company in December 2011 to give students the opportunity to celebrate their achievements and meet the patron of the event, Cate Blanchet. Naomi McCarthy, Head Coach of water polo at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, was recently presented with the Team Sport Australia Award by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. The extraordinary feats of the Australian gold medal winning women’s water polo team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics were recognised during a presentation ceremony at the Water Polo Pan Pacs in Melbourne. Robert Lay (pictured right with Naomi) from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame highlighted the significance of the role that Naomi and the team contributed to in ‘keeping the country’s great sporting history alive’. Naomi’s team became the darlings of the 2000 Olympics after they achieved a remarkable last-minute victory over the USA in the final. Water polo Head Coach inducted into Hall of Fame

On 17 March, a large contingent from Brisbane Girls Grammar School participated in the annual International Women’s Day Fun Run/Walk, a fundraising event designed to celebrate the role of women in sport while providing hope and support for women with breast cancer. Grammar girls have been running in this event for the past eight years, learning important life skills including self-belief, compassion and teamwork. The event inspired the girls to perform exceptionally on the day and their impressive showing augurs well for this year’s Cross Country season. This year, the School will be striving for its 19th consecutive victory in the QGSSSA championship, led by captains Lauren Mewing (12L) and Emily Perrin (12H). The team are confidently espousing their 2012 motto, Nineteen, we're keen!
