Assignment Borrowing- Staff

Library borrowing for assignment access

Rationale: The aims that underpin this policy are to:

• facilitate equity of access to all library resources, books, DVDs, etc.; • ensure highly used items remain in circulation for the availability of all; • encourage students to use library time and resources more productively; • assist students to manage their time and library resources more efficiently; and • promote effective research skills and the optimal use of class and teacher time. Library behaviour: Students are expected to follow the following behaviours: • quiet, sustained work with no extended chatting; • remaining seated in an allocated area; • accessing trolleys of resources under teacher supervision; • only one resource used at a time during class; and • photocopying limited to 5 – 10 pages, especially if other users are waiting. Borrowing procedures: For assignments, normal student borrowing may be altered to promote equity of access. Conditions may changed in negotiation with library staff and according to

• the number of students, • the number of resources, • the grade level, or • whether it is week time or over a weekend.

The Head of Department will inform the Library Assistant of the specific borrowing requirements before the start of a new unit of work and an outline of these requirements will be displayed at the circulation desk. Any number of resources or borrowing times can be accommodated: for, example, • No borrowing of books or DVDs for the duration of the assignment. • No books or DVDs to be borrowed during the school week for the first two weeks of the assignment. Thereafter, one book per night per student but DVDs only on weekends. • One book overnight [or the weekend] for an individual student. Overnight loans must be returned before first lesson on the following school day. • Two books allowed overnight. • One book for two nights with return before period 1 on the designated day of return. • On weekends, up to two books and one DVD per student. • DVDs only to be borrowed on weekends. • Up to three books and one DVD per student over a weekend. These arrangements are totally a decision of the Head of Department and the Library assistant will keep a collated list for each term at the circulation workstation.
