After graduating from Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Wendy Allen won an Art Scholarship to Brisbane Central Technical College, studying under tutors such as William Robinson, Melville Haysom, and Carl McConnell. She has been a teacher for a substantial part of her career, both at the tertiary and secondary level, including at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, and has travelled and lectured overseas in her capacity as an artist and teacher.

Wendy has also published textbooks on art for use in primary, secondary, and university classes.

‘ The majority of my paintings evolve in layers so that the content can be approached from a contemplation of several perspectives such as the archetypal principles at work in Nature, references from any aspect of human endeavour such as mythologies, philosophies, religions, and politics and from my own personal experience. The viewer can delve as deeply as he or she wishes, ’ Wendy said.

Jennifer Andrews (1956 - ) Alumna 1973

Her work on designing the stained-glass windows in the School is testament to her creative processes in marrying a traditional art form with contemporary ideas. Jennifer’s practice not only includes large stained-glass window designs but also designs for textile works, illustration, and works for print and web. Her practice has been extensive, but her main focus is drawing. In 2021, Jennifer was awarded a Doctorate of Visual Art at QCA, Griffith University, where she explored conventional understandings of representation and ways of integrating traditional and digital image making.

Beverley Budgen is an alumna of Brisbane Girls Grammar School (1952-1953). Beverley comments on her Art classes at School:

‘ At Brisbane Girls Grammar School the Art classes brought immense joy, and it was here that my first connection with art history was made. This introduction sparked a lifelong quest for knowledge of what artists had created in the past ,’ she said. At 17 years old, Beverley won the Sunday Mail Open Art prize. As a female, she was encouraged to study commercial art rather than painting; however, encounters with Margaret Olley and Betty and Roy Churcher ensured that her talent as a painter was allowed to develop.

Beverley has travelled extensively and draws on these experiences, as well as her love of home, to work across a number of genres, including interiors and still life.

Born in Brisbane in 1934, Elisabeth Cummings is an alumna of Brisbane Girls Grammar School (1949 1952). She is a prominent and much sought-after Australian artist with an Order of Australia award for her contribution to the art industry through her creations and mentoring of emerging artists. As one of Australia’s most respected artists, her works are held in all major Australian public collections. Elisabeth Cummings was influenced by a number of artists, French and American, as well as Australian artists such as Margaret Olley and Donald Friend. In 1958, she left for Europe where she spent time in Italy, France, and England. She lives and works in Wedderburn, NSW, an artists’ colony she helped establish in the early 1970s. In April 2018, Elisabeth responded to correspondence from Lorraine Thornquist, Manager, Arts Collections, at Brisbane Girls Grammar School and she generously gifted three works to the School. Her oil on canvas, Still Life with Black Olives is representative of her energetic style and the vitality and colour she brings to her work. The School was also privileged to have received two prints of her etchings, New Moon on the Warburton River and Western Country .

The School is honoured to feature the work of Elisabeth Cummings in our collection.

Kylie Elkington was born in Sydney and currently lives and works in Tasmania. In 2005, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art with First Class Honours from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

During her studies, Kylie was awarded the Phillip Bacon Commendation and went on to receive an Australia Council for the Arts New Work Grant in 2007.

In 2011 she undertook a six-month residency with the Bayside City Council at Billilla Historic Mansion in Brighton, Victoria, and was granted a Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence in 2012.

Most recently, Kylie has been a finalist in the Glover Prize 2018 and 2019, the Hutchins Art Prize 2018, Hadley's Art Prize 2019, and the Women's Art Prize Tasmania in 2021.

Anna Jacobson (1987 - ) Alumna 2005

Anna Jacobson is an award-winning writer and artist from Brisbane. Her first full-length poetry collection won the 2018 Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize.

In 2020, Anna won the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Writing and was awarded a Queensland Writers Fellowship. In 2018 she won the Queensland Premier’s Young Publishers and Writers Award.

Her writing has been published in many literary journals and anthologies. In 2022, she entered a self portrait into the Brisbane Portrait Prize.

She grew up in South East Queensland and left Queensland as a young woman. She has lived much of her life in the Blue Mountains and in coastal New South Wales. After graduating as an Art teacher, Kerry studied painting in Sydney at the John Ogburn Studio for two years. She subsequently undertook an extensive study tour of European galleries and museums, including painting sojourns in Paris and the south of France. Since her first solo exhibition in 1979, she has exhibited consistently in numerous solo and group shows in commercial galleries. Kerry is recognised as an established Australian Landscape painter with a long history of finalist prize exhibitions, winning several Australian Art Awards. Her work is held in a number of Australian Public Collections For many years, her subject matter has been landscape and abstraction. The shaping of visual form remains an imperative in her work. ‘ My en-plein-air painting most often draws on familiar landscape imagery, the observation of natural assemblages of trees in the bush or in front of water. ‘ I like a painting to appear at first look, then shift focus as the observer explores the canvas. I enjoy observation as both perception and impression, lately finding pleasure in using greater naturalism, ’ Kerry Johns, 2021.

After her studies at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Jan Jorgensen studied at the College of Art and began working as an artist for a Brisbane newspaper. She then studied under William Robinson while doing an Associate Diploma of Visual Art at the Kelvin Grove College of Art.

‘ My paintings are about the human and architectural faces of the inner-city suburbs — the unseen, often ignored everyday places of my home town, ’ Jan said.

From the artist ‘ Changing Perspective is a body of work exploring emotional and visual differences in contrasting surroundings that I have lived in. Having returned from Budapest, Hungary, after 15 years to the far north coast of NSW, where I lived as a teenager, I found the natural beauty and tranquillity provided inspiration to contemplate my changed visual influences. In part, this is a personal journey. It is also representative of our experiences as we travel our world, changing our notions of home. With these images I explore a sense of understanding, belonging and familiarity in my environment — wherever that may be. ’

Kathleen Shillam was an acclaimed Brisbane-based sculptor. In 1976, Kathleen and her husband, Leonard, were awarded life membership of the Society of Sculptors, Queensland.

A decade later both Kathleen and Leonard were appointed Members of the Order of Australia.

In December 2000, they were awarded Honorary Doctorates of Philosophy for services to the arts, notably sculpture, from The University of Queensland.

Robyn Stacey is one of Australia's most acclaimed photographers and she has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally since the mid-1980s.

Robyn is an Adjunct Fellow at Western Sydney University, was a member of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council from 2006 to 2008 and her work is studied as part of the curriculum in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia.

Valerie Waring (Smeed) is an alumna of Brisbane Girls Grammar School, 1948 to 1949.

She began her training working as a museum artist at Queensland Museum with attendance at Brisbane Technical College Classes and later workshops run by the late Melville Haysom, John Rigby, the late Len and Kathleen Shillam and, more recently, Robert Wade and Greg Allen. Valerie has won numerous local awards and she has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Galleries in London, the Queensland Art Gallery in the L.J. Harvey Drawing Prize and the Andrew & Lilian Petersen Memorial Prize.

She has had a number of solo exhibitions and in 1988 she designed and painted the murals for the Univations Pavilion at Expo 88.

She is represented in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, and Japan.

Carol Watkins (1950 - ) Alumna 1967

Carol Watkins is founder of Hinterland Ceramics and she took up pottery in 2003 towards the end of a busy career in Human Resource Management. This included running her own agency in Brisbane.

Alternative firing methods such as raku, smoke and saggar are among her favourite mediums and processes. The origin of raku can be traced back to sixteenth century Japan and involves firing the glaze at a low temperature, removing pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot and introducing them into a reduction chamber containing combustible materials. The result can be unpredictable, leading to a certain serendipity, also present in Saggar and part of the fascination for the artist. No two pots will ever be exactly the same.

Dr Geraldine Wheeler is an alumna of Brisbane Girls Grammar School. As a minister of religion and theology , Dr Wheeler’s work speaks of narratives from the Christian tradition. Her interest has long been the intersection between art and religion and she is the founder of the group Visionaries, a network of visual artists from the Uniting Church and other Christian Churches in South East Queensland, Australia. This gouache stencil painting was created for an exhibition by the artists of Visionaries at the Australian Catholic University and Mueller College, Rothwell, in 2010. The preparation for the exhibition began with Dr Lindsay Farrell leading the group of artists to view the art with Christian religious themes in the Queensland Art Gallery, with the aim that these works, dating from early Renaissance times to the present, would provide inspiration for the exhibition as a contemporary response to these works. ‘ Because my gouache stencil paintings are done on black paper, I was inspired by a 17th-century Dutch painting, Madonna and Child Surrounded by Roses, by Jan van Kessell the Elder (for the flowers) and by the Circle of Simon de Vos (for the Madonna and Child image). This painting has a black background. With my works based on biblical themes, I aim to translate them into Australian settings, hence the use of Australian native flowers to surround the Mother and Child figures, which I dared to paint as Indigenous Australians, ’ Dr Geraldine Wheeler.

Kay Breedon Williams attended Brisbane Girls Grammar School as a boarder. She is an illustrator and painter of wildlife. She is also a writer and film maker.

After graduating from BGGS, Kay worked at the Queensland Museum for six and a half years before travelling throughout Australia to collect information, photographs and drawings of Australian native flora and fauna. Between 1966 and 1973, she published seven books on Australian wildlife and between 1978 and 1980 she designed 20 bird stamps for Australia Post. She also designed flora, fauna, and gemstone images for the Premier’s Department in Queensland.
