NIGHTFALL

A RACE AGAINST TIME

My position was a sort of crouching one like that of a panther about to spring. The starting time came and the signal was given. I started off racing frantically. Coming to my semes I slowed up a little. I recalled the training and advice given to me beforehand and began to act a little more normally. All the tension, strain and anxiety that had been pent up inside me was released and it was if it all flowed out in my efforts. As I reached the obstacle I remembered my instructions to deal with such situations and tried my best to cope with them. Finding myself behind, panic akin to that initially ex- perienced, set in, arid drops of perspiration dropped from an almost fevered brow until I gained the lost time. Feeling more at ease I settled down once more and progressed steadily towards my goal. ·Nearing the "home turn" I grew eager and came in to my satisfaction. I put down m~ pen and breathed a sigh; my very first Grammar School examination was over.

Night falls so softly, In golds and mauves and pinks,

Filling each valley with Cool, quiet. contentment.

The birds are at rest, And the children are silent, The last glow of day Is fading so softly, Just as a soul renders itself.

The mauve mist is Skilfully hiding the trees And the houses, While voices are fading Like the golden glow on the dying clouds .

THE CHURCH

Within, all is hushed and dim, Through the windows filter the mellow, tinted Shafts of sunlight, casting rosy beams To pierce the gloom. The old, worn pews are empty, and steeped In glowing hues. The aisle is dark, and at its end, the altar shines. Above the altar, a great and gleaming window Pours light onto the shining Cross. The C'rucifix is glowing as the small red lamp reveals it Soft and sweet, encircled by its halo of gold and rose . This is my• church.
