French

Walking into the French classroom for the first time in Year 7 was truly a highlight. Armed with an ‘extensive’ knowledge of the French essentials (‘oui’ and ‘bonjour’), we quickly learned that our knowledge wasn’t quite as extensive as we’d thought and that there was more to French than clichés (spoiler alert: they don’t actually wear berets). With the help of our passionate teachers, we quickly immersed into the French world. Starting out with the basics, we quickly grew in confidence and ability, covering topics like families, French celebrities, foods, and travel. Moving into senior school, our education continued to grow. The small cohort soon became a tight-knit community where we had the opportunity to share opinions and converse freely in (mostly) French. With topics focusing on culture, French clichés, relationships, schooling, and the future, we gained hands-on experience through weekly conversation practice. Our learning extended outside of the class setting with highlights including taste testing the best of French cuisine—le pain au chocolat and hot chocolate—making our own crêpes and learning the art of cheese etiquette. At Girls Grammar, we walk out of the classroom with not just knowledge, but a true appreciation for French language and culture. Danika Fisher (12L) and Maya Condon (12O)
