Service Report

This year, as the 2024 Service Captains, we believed that three values laid at the core of Girls Grammar Service: passion, unity, and empowerment. These three words inspired our motto, United in passion, the royal blue takes action . The motto is a purposeful phrase which captures the passionate drive of Girls Grammar students to unite through positive action and empower others. This year, we have focused extensively on skin cancer prevention strategies, alongside volunteering and fundraising to support the education programs and research undertaken by Cancer Council Queensland. From the overwhelming support of switching out facepaint for SPF 50+ zinc sticks, to increasing hat-wearing around School, we have truly integrated the importance of sun safety into the Girls Grammar community. In Service, grasping the ‘why’ behind our actions is crucial. In order to make a truly significant difference, we need to connect with the underlying reasons for our Service efforts. This year, we have narrowed in on this ‘why’ through our conscious efforts of enhancing sun safety and educating the BGGS community about the critical dangers of skin cancer.

2024 featured a range of notable Service highlights. Annual events such as White Blouse Day, ANZAC day and NAIDOC week showcased continued success. We saw countless BGGS students connect and unite in passion, partaking in: Grammar Goes Green—Marrapatta edition; Second Chance’s Sleep-Out; the Health Promoting School Staff-Student Netball game; the Red Earth Immersion; the 2024 Ponytail Project; plus, the many other Service filled events throughout the year, We extend our heartfelt thanks to the House Service Captains and Service Group Leaders for their remarkable coordination and dedication over the year. We also express our gratitude to Director of Service, Ms Lynne Mungomery, along with all the staff coordinators, for their ongoing guidance and invaluable contributions throughout the year. Save The Children

The Save the Children (STC) Service Club at BGGS is named after a non-profit organisation which aims to build a better world for children. Our Service Club advocates and supports the important causes of STC—protecting children from harm and helping them to access quality education and health services. STC is active in working towards resolutions for some of the biggest issues that face children today. Every year, the STC club organises fundraising activities on a term basis. This year, with the support of our coordinators—Ms Renae Davis and Ms Corrinne Scruby—our club held an ice cream stall in Term 1, bake stall in Term 2, and the iconic big bear raffle in Term 3, raising an impressive total so far of $1761.12. All profits are donated to STC, supporting them in creating a world where every child has a safe and happy childhood. Isabella Yu (11M) and Sophia Manique (12H) Save the Children Student Leaders

Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward is a Service Club for Year 7 students that meets on a Friday at lunchtime and supports other School Service Groups in a variety of ways. This year the students: sorted plastic lids by colour for the Technology Faculty to repurpose; provided the decorations for the KJ Leukaemia Committee’s Formal Fashion Parade and GECO noticeboard; and made badges for Cricket’s Pink Stumps Day. The final project for the year will be making Christmas tags for the Second Chance Committee’s present drive. It’s a great way for Year 7 students to relax, meet people from other Houses, and help the School’s Service Program. Mrs Edwards and Mrs Knight
