Foundation Day

The long-standing tradition of Blue Days are the keystone celebrations of school spirit and pride at Girls Grammar. With three Blue Days throughout the year, the highly anticipated festivities are a chance for the whole School to come together and cheer on our athletes and musicians for upcoming events like QGSSSA Swimming, Athletics, Gymnastics and Gala. This year’s Blue Days showcased the strength of the sisterhood’s bonds—or ties, if you will— like never before. Foundation Day is a key event for the Brisbane Girls Grammar School community. Celebrating the School's foundation not only allows us to reflect on our rich history, but to acknowledge and celebrate every person whose efforts have afforded us the opportunities we have today. From our first Principal, Mrs Janet O'Connor, to our current staff, Foundation Day inspires our gratitude for the incredible people who guide our school. This year on Foundation Day, we were addressed by BGGS alumna, Ms Kirby Short (2003). Ms Short spoke to us about the importance of making difficult choices to allow growth. She shared her own experience with difficult decision making and instilled the sentiment that has guided her to make these decisions—never be satisfied; instead, strive for new and empowering opportunities. There are several opportunities throughout the day to celebrate the School and its values. Of course, the Foundation Day cake is a long-standing tradition (it's the School's birthday, after all!) that we all consider an absolute highlight. But also, during assembly,

I showcased and conducted my original choral piece, Roads Go Ever On ; this opportunity is just one of the countless unique experiences that the School provides to students. For this, we are reminded to be grateful for our founders, who set a high standard for celebrating the effort and merits of young women. Overall, Foundation Day was as wonderful as ever. It reminds us to acknowledge and thank those who came before us, whilst embodying their values by cheering on the present and future of the School. Perhaps this sentiment is best said by Svetlana Hadgraft, who penned the lyrics to our school song: ‘inspired by those who show the way, we keep their hopes alive’. Dorothy Rae (12G)

Blue Days

The year started off in full swing with a ‘High School Blue-sical’ themed Blue Day where the student’s embraced their inner Gabriella and Troy and proved that Grammar girls truly are ‘all in this together’. Term 2s ‘Blue-nnings’ theme continued the fun, wih the School seeing an abundance of outdoor and barbeque accessories. We finished the year off with a bang with a ‘ Blue -lympics’ Blue Day in Term 3—just in time for the upcoming Paris Olympics. It’s safe to say that the fun-filled costumes, extensive decorations, and unbeatable spirit proved why the first-place ribbon is always blue. Zinc application, limited edition badges, bum-bags, and lob-a-shot, were successful in raising money for the 2024 School Charity, Cancer Council. From proudly decking out in anything and everything blue to giving it our all on the D-floor, there is no doubt we have lived this year’s School motto, Together Strong, in Blue We Belong , to the fullest.
