The Great Wave by Dorothy Rae (12G)
La Nuit Tombante by Lizzy Harman (10L) Through the use of a jazz idiom, La Nuit Tombante (nightfall), communicates what is felt when watching a beautiful sunset. The reflective nature of this act evokes many feelings such as calmness, contentment, peace, and awe-inspiring. However, when in the midst of a sunset, some other feelings such as longing can come over you as you reflect on certain moments of your life. The Great Wave is a composition written for String Orchestra and Piano, inspired by the Hokusai painting: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa . Drawing inspiration from both the post-Minimalist and cinematic styles, it depicts the painting by communicating images of an expansive ocean, a great wave, and the ripples as the wave recedes once again.
