Sigma Maths

Through Sigma Maths, students have the opportunity to participate in a range of maths competitions throughout the year to challenge our mathematical thinking. The wide variety of competitions on offer has allowed us to extend our learning in maths beyond the classroom. Students have the chance to apply knowledge from class to a challenging, problem-solving scenario to further our critical thinking skills. These competitions also open the door for us to participate in further maths opportunities such as summer schools and training programs. We would encourage any maths enthusiasts to get involved with any Sigma Maths activities. Grace Gong (11O) and Saathvika Maturu (11H)

Year 7 Interhouse Maths

On Monday 13 May, one team from each House gathered together to compete in the Year 7 Interhouse Maths Quiz. Each team varied in size, with one team only having two members, compared to Woolcock who had an outstanding nine participants. The competition consisted of five rounds: speed; individual short answer; general knowledge; estimation; and trivia. Three girls from each House competed in the first four rounds, but the last round was our favourite because everyone in our team could join in and work together. Filled with fun and maths, everyone enjoyed the night. O’Connor rose victorious and received a trophy and box of chocolates to share with their House Group. From the snacks to the friendly competition, it

was definitely a night to be remembered. Olivia Chen (7O) and Aadya Kariot (7O)

Year 8 Maths Team Challenge

The Year 8 Maths Team Challenge is an amazing event where teams compete in three rounds to win the competition. Everyone can choose their own teams and the competition is aimed at Year 8s who love Maths and competitions. The competition is a great way to form friendships while doing complicated maths problems and having lots of fun. My team, called ‘Mrs Mazzaglia’s Favourite Students’ (we totally are), came first and it was truly the highlight of my year. The challenge is so fun, enjoyable and incredible. We’d like to thank all the Maths teachers for organising this event, especially Mrs Lee Mazzaglia. Xueyao (Jade) Bai (8B)

QHTA Competition

In the QHTA competition, students from Years 7 to 12 in Queensland and the Northern Territory submit essays or other historical writing—like reports, diary entries, or articles—based on research or independent investigations that meet specific criteria. This challenging competition demands exceptional skills in research, source analysis, and communication, and Girls Grammar has once again experienced resounding success in the competition in 2024 as seen by the wonderful results below.
