Throughout the year, the Committee also collected each and every article you will read in the Magazine today, and thus are responsible for capturing the buzz of life at Girls Grammar in 2024—from Galentines Day celebrations, to our wonderful co-curricular tours, to the Interhouse Choir's beautiful harmonies. On these pages, you see just a hint of the design process, and you’ll hear from our valuable, brilliant, dedicated members. Miss Kathryn Talbot PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE COORDINATOR
The Publications Committee are the creative and organisational masterminds behind your School Magazine. This year, we were most inspired by ties, connections, and togetherness, eventually coming to understand how the uniform— particularly our royal-blue ribbon—is emblematic of such unity. The girls, led by their indomitable Captain, Jasmin Burgess (12E), worked tirelessly to create a brief, complete with a mock-up of what was envisioned as the perfect cover, and teamed up with a pro designer to bring those ideas to vibrant life.

Moving forward with the simple yet iconic theme of our uniform, we sought to entwine this motif throughout the Magazine. We created a sense of connection and cohesion throughout with a ‘scrapbooked’ look, emphasising how, just like our community, the Magazine was made together, with love. Additionally, this handmade look complemented the use of ribbons and embroidery we incorporated to allude to the unity of our beloved formal uniform while embracing this year’s school motto. With unity and teamwork being a pivotal theme of this Magazine, the tireless work of many individuals came together to produce the print copy you hold now: from the Publications Committee, whose ideas and suggestions formed the backbone of the Magazine; to the captains, staff, and students of the broader School community who contributed to each page. Welcome to the 2024 Brisbane Girls Grammar School Magazine. Embracing this year’s school motto— Together strong, in blue we belong #tietheblue —we have strived to create not just a magazine but a monument to tie together and encapsulate the year 2024. Our motto this year brought with it a sense of kinship and community, highlighting the strength of our Girls Grammar sisterhood. With the unity we students create at the forefront of our minds, we explored the physical attributes that help to unite us all, finding our School uniform to be truly at the heart of it. From the iconic blue ribbon that makes a Grammar girl stand out in any crowd, to the more subtle aspects such as the emblem embroidered on the blouse pocket and the achievements colouring our blazer pockets, our school uniform stands to set us apart from others while acknowledging the strong bonds of our sisterhood.
would have been possible without the aid of Ms Talbot—our Publications Coordinator—and the School Communications team whose hours of work ensured that this project was realised seamlessly. Now, please enjoy the strengths and achievements of our royal blue community as you read this year’s Magazine. Jasmin Burgess (12E) PUBLICATIONS CAPTAIN

At Brisbane Girls Grammar School, students proudly immerse themselves in the Grammar blue, with the 2024 School motto— Together Strong, in Blue We Belong #tietheblue —aptly capturing the strong bonds amongst the girls and delight our students have in their School. The Publications Committee has crafted a beautiful keepsake with this year’s School Magazine in which every ribbon, bow and word has been thoughtfully considered and placed to reflect the strength, unity and belonging embodied by the sisterhood. For here in these pages, is a precious memento of their time at the School. As you read through the Magazine, you will hear the experience of BGGS through the voices of the students. The articles tell the stories of academic excellence, House spirit and the interwoven connections developed within the community, fostering lifelong friendships and support. These stories of belonging and participation tie together the School's traditions and aspirations
and, as we approach our 150-year anniversary, are a timely reminder of the stories of our long history. They have paved the way for opportunity and continued growth. This year our students have participated in: Interhouse and Interschool music and sporting competitions; Service and Club activities and fundraisers; Study Tours; and events such as Open Day; all while maintaining an unwavering dedication to their learning. To the graduating class of 2024, I hope you look back on your time at Brisbane Girls Grammar School as a time of rigorous challenge and exciting opportunity. It has been a pleasure watching you embrace the responsibilities of Year 12 united and confident, and I thank you for your talented and generous contribution to our School. You will make an important impact in the world, and I wish you every success. Let this Magazine be a reminder of your time here at BGGS and a lasting tie .

‘Blue-lympics.’ Through these initiatives, we learned about the importance of adapting and finding solutions to problems, but most importantly, worked with a wonderful network of girls to put the pieces in place. Of the multitude of audiences that we had the privilege of addressing this year, the opportunity to speak to future parents and incoming students was particularly enriching. Given these addresses often involved summarising our six-year experience at School into a short speech, it proved a challenge to distil the biggest chapter of our lives thus far into mere sentences. Grammar has given us so much to be proud of and grateful for: from helping us fulfill our educational aspirations; to providing us with wonderful opportunities beyond the classroom; and being our home away from home. As we look to the future beyond the white picket fence, we encourage the girls to trust that the foundations of a Girls Grammar education and the unwavering support from our sisterhood will propel them into a future where they can face any challenge and wholeheartedly embrace anything that comes their way.
2024 has been an incredible showcase of our sisterhood's spirit, and we are so grateful to have been a part of it—from the girls we were in Year 7 to the young women we are today, and the support system and lifelong friends made along the way. Just a year ago, the Student Council put their heads together to create a motto that would encapsulate 2024 and represent our grade and the wider student body's enthusiasm to the best of its ability. After much deliberation, we landed on: Together Strong, In Blue We Belong #TieTheBlue . Through the themes of collective strength, unity, and belonging, we sought to integrate a sense of togetherness throughout the School community. From the remarkable displays of support at every event, to the love and connection seen around school day-to-day—each and every girl has been surrounded by a community much larger than herself. We're so lucky to have led a group of such charismatic and empowered young women through Student Council, all of whom worked diligently to fulfill our collective vision for 2024. In organising events and fundraisers, we gained the ability to navigate the puzzle of leadership and particularly enjoyed coming up with some admittedly bad puns for our Blue Day themes: ‘High School Blue-sical’; ‘Blue-nnings’; and

Beanland We also had the honour of celebrating Beanland’s 30th Birthday, where we reflected on the history of Beanland and how our unique spirit sets us apart. The celebration was complete with pink cake and a visit from our past two Heads of House. This year, we supported DigIn—an organisation providing home-cooked meals to Brisbane’s homeless—as our House charity. We were drawn to this charity because it resonated with our values of community and empathy. We raised money for DigIn through our iconic fairy floss stall on Open Day, which is always a crowd favourite!
This year, Beanland House truly embodied our motto, No Limit to Pink Spirit , showcasing our boundless energy and enthusiasm in everything we did. From decking out in pink costumes for Interhouse events, to cheering on our Beanland sisters, our spirit knows no limits. We kicked off the year with a ‘Throwback’ themed House Party, where everyone dressed in creative pink costumes inspired by the past, and enjoyed an afternoon of music, dancing, and games. The fun continued throughout the year in our weekly Miss Beanland competitions during House Assemblies. These year-level contests including ‘Guess the Movie’, ‘Keep the Balloon Up’, and the ‘Ping Pong Ball Race’, brought everyone together in friendly competition. Some highlights from this year include: our Interhouse Choir performance of Pompeii by Bastille; the Grade 7s embracing the pink spirit with the support of their Year 12 Buddies; and cheering on our Beanland sisters at the Interhouse Athletics and Swimming Carnival. A special shoutout must go to our fellow Beanlander, Cate Ward (11B), who won School Swimming Champion—we are so proud! What made this year particularly special was our new initiative of spirit sticks— pink, decorated sticks designed by each Beanland House Group. These became a symbol of our collective energy and spirit and appeared at many House events.
We are so proud to have led Beanland in 2024 alongside our Beanland Sports Captains, Sophie Dwyer and Ruby George (12B); Service Captains, Elsie Butler and Charlotte Clayton (12B); and Prefects, Alyssa Godinho, Eloise Langguth, Georgie Falting, Grace Grant, Molly Gregory, and Charlotte Zentveld (12B). We owe a big thank you to Head of Beanland House, Mrs Sacha Cross, whose passion and leadership made organising House Assemblies run so smoothly. We also want to extend our gratitude to our new Head of Beanland House, Mrs Sally Callie, for stepping into the role in the final term and guiding us with the same care and enthusiasm. In 2024, Beanland proved that there truly is no limit to what we can achieve when we come together with passion, pride, and a whole lot of pink! England Open Day during Term 3 was another highlight. Our Year 7 welcome stand saw tremendous success, and the Year 11 eagles ran the churros stall with flying colours. Through their hard work and dedication, we raised over $3300 for Youngcare, supporting their mission to provide young disabled people with the housing and care they deserve. House Assemblies continued to be the heart of our weekly routine. Each Thursday morning, our eagles gathered in the Gehrmann Theatre, affectionately known as ‘the nest,’ for a variety of fun and engaging activities. From a ping-pong ball obstacle course to an Olympics-inspired relay and our Term 3 Benchball Tournament, there was no shortage of laughter and team spirit. Within the House, we launched a new initiative this year—the England Cup. Designed to foster pride in wearing our uniform and to encourage participation across all Year levels, the England Cup has brought fresh energy to House Group competitions. We hope this tradition continues to thrive in the years to come. A special thank you goes out to our prefects, who supported the younger students with their weekly visits, organising games and activities during House Group time. Their leadership and commitment have made a lasting impact on the younger eagles. England House has truly soared in 2024. We’ve stayed united as a flock through all the challenges and triumphs of the year. It has been an honour to lead this compassionate, dedicated group of eagles alongside Ms Alysia Stark. We are so proud of every student and grateful to our teachers for their unwavering support. Together, we’ve lifted England to new heights! Ellen Baek (12E) and Georgia Mackay (12E) HOUSE CAPTAINS placing second in the 13 Years Age Championship. While we placed 7th overall, the effort and enthusiasm from every swimmer left us proud. Next up was Interhouse Choir, where we delivered a heartfelt performance of Rewrite the Stars . Led by soloists Clare Dooley (10E) and Kira Green (9E), along with our Choir Captains, Amelia Perry (12E) and Anika Flanagan (12E), the entire choir came together for a beautiful and memorable performance.
2024 has been an incredible year for England House. Backed by this year’s motto— Up the blue, soar on through, #twentysoar —we’ve supported every eagle to achieve their goals and spread the blue spirit throughout the House. As a House built on the values of kindness and inclusion, it’s been wonderful to see high levels iconic House Party at the start of the year. Themed Brrr, it’s cold in here , inspired by our House war cry, the eagles dressed as an array of frosty characters—from Olaf and Elsa to scenes from Titanic. The creativity on display was unmatched! Girls battled it out in a handless donut-eating competition and strutted down the runway in their ‘blue-tiful’ costumes. Interhouse Swimming showcased our House spirit in full force. Special congratulations to Ella Rocket (8E) for of participation in Interhouse competitions, weekly House Assemblies, and of course, our

Interhouse competitions highlighted our unity, spirit, and enthusiasm. From war-cries to purple face-paint, the Gibbies shook Chandler to its core at Interhouse Swimming recording a magnitude of 10 on the spirit scale. We are eternally grateful and appreciative of our House Sports Captains, Sophie Crane (12G) and Asha Stewart (12G), who work incredibly hard to ensure that every Gibbie has the opportunity to participate. For the renowned Interhouse Choir Competition, Gibson performed an epic rendition of Coldplay’s Something Just Like This , led by our wonderful House Choir Captains, Keira Crouch (12G), Dorothy Rae (12G), and Abigail Bratic (12G). Ultimately, the legion walked away with an ‘unconfirmed’ fourth place (we have a strong suspicion). Throughout the year, we traded our fierce competitive spirit for a more compassionate one, fundraising for our House charity, Mercy Without Limits. This charity provides education and support to orphans, women, and families in need around the world. Our main fundraising event was a massive success, with Gibson’s famous strawberries and ice-cream stall on Open Day selling out before the end of the night! This year has flown by, and every Gibbie should be immensely proud of all that we’ve achieved along the way. We are deeply honoured to have had the opportunity to lead the legion in 2024 and to witness the Gibbies embody a spirit better than the rest . We extend our gratitude to our Mother Gibbie, Mrs Hazel Boltman, who has supported us every step of the way. As we embark on this new chapter, we hope that our Gibbie sisters will continue to strengthen their purple patriotism. So, see you later, and remember that

This year, 12 Gibson developed the motto: Better than the rest, we are Gib-blessed #Gibblessedin24 . We wanted our final motto to encapsulate the love and pride we feel in our legion and to inspire the purple patriotism in every Gibbie. While our motto ‘unfortunately’ did not eventuate in first place at every Interhouse carnival, this year we have been incredibly proud of the Gladiators unrivalled spirit, enthusiasm for house-related activities, and eagerness to get involved. Starting the year off with a bang, our ‘Purple Through the Decades’ themed House Party saw girls decked out head to toe in purple—from first century Gladiators, to Teletubbies, to Ice Spice dupes. Gibbies participated in the annual doughnut-eating competition, Monte Carlo , and of course a Just Dance or two. And with that, our newest Gladiators (Year 7s) were officially Gib-blessed into the legion, and the Gibbies were ready to rumble. Fridays quickly became our favourite day of the week, as House Assemblies brought the legion together for some quality bonding time. What better way to wrap up the school week than with pancake and pastry breakfasts, bride and groom costume designing (using toilet paper and alfoil of course), Kahoot! , and cookie decorating?

Griffith to school-wide Hide and Seek, these ‘Webs’ have weaved our House together stronger than ever. We chose to support Eat Up again this year, not only to support this incredible cause, but because it gave the House the opportunity to have a more hands on involvement with our charity. Eat Up delivers over 20 000 lunches directly to hungry school children so that they can learn to the best of their abilities. Griffith girls have made and wrapped thousands
This year has truly been inc-RED-ible and we could not be prouder to say that the Griffith sisterhood is still unmatched. As the 2024 Griffith seniors, we wanted to create a motto that would encompass our House Group’s values of love, kindness, and Griffith spirit! With this goal in mind, we developed our motto— Unite the pack, unleash the redback —and Griffith has certainly embodied it this year. We started the year off with a bang at our House Party. The theme ‘Rhyme without Reason’ saw the girls dressed in red costumes from ‘Target and Red Carpet’ to ‘Elmo and Mario’. We soon dived right into Interhouse Swimming, where the other houses weren't even RED-y for our sea of red pom-poms and unrivalled competitive spirit which was also showcased at the Interhouse Choir Competition. Led by House Choir Captains, Helen Mellick (12R) and Lisa Walsham (12R), the House performed an amazing rendition of Maroon 5’s, Maps . A huge thank you must also go to our House Sport Captains, Zara Davis (12R) and Sarah Greenwood (12R), who worked tirelessly, both behind the scenes and on the days, to ensure our Interhouse carnivals ran smoothly. This year at our Thursday House Assemblies, we also introduced inter year ‘Webs’, fondly named in line with this year’s hashtag #weavetheweb (a nostalgic nod to our hashtag from Year 7). We wanted our ‘Webs’ initiative to foster stronger connections across the House to promote an inclusive environment where everyone felt supported and encouraged by their peers. From Easter-egg hunts
of cheese sandwiches for Eat Up—a feat that could not have been achieved without our House Service Captains, Nishika Lakshmi Narayanan (12R) and Stephanie Tsai (12R). 2024 also saw a stunning Open Day, with Year 11 Griffith organising the fan-favourite Lob-A-Choc stall to raise even more funds for Eat Up. We are extremely proud to have provided lunches for thousands of children who otherwise would go to school hungry. Griffith House would not be the same without our incredible Head of House, House Group teachers, and of course, our mother-away-from-home, Year 12 House Group teacher, Mrs Betty-Anne Briggs. To each and every fellow Griffith spider—thank you for making this year unforgettable. As we leave Girls Grammar behind, we are sure that this RED-iculously amazing sisterhood will continue to unite the pack and unleash the redback . Ruby Coltzau (12R) and Kaiyu Su (12R) HOUSE CAPTAINS

togetherness, spirit, love, zest, and passion. We believe this motto signifies how we want every tiger to be loud and proud about being part of the pack, while also striving to achieve their personal best.
Hirschfeld This year, the Year 12 Tigers welcomed in the new Year 7 Tiger Cubs, with each girl being allocated a buddy to support and guide through their first year at BGGS. This has been significant in strengthening the connections among our tiger family. Hirschfeld continued the year with this energy, into the first Interhouse event, Swimming, where we came a roaring second place! This outstanding result made us proud of the phenomenal participation and prowess of our girls. This fuelled us into the Interhouse Choir Competition, where we performed a lively rendition of Queen’s Somebody to Love , taking home the first place prize! We were so excited by this amazing result! Hirschfeld carried this passion into Service, supporting the Pyjama Foundation. The House has a long-standing connection with this charity, which we have supported for 15 years. Hirschfeld’s main fundraiser for the charity was our infamous Hot Potato Store at BGGS Open Day! This stall is always the highlight of the night, being so busy it calls for help from students, staff, and parents! We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Pyjama Foundation Founder, Bronwyn Sheehan, who spoke about the charity, how it began, and what we can do to support the foundation beyond our years
at Girls Grammar. Roar on, tiger pack! #ROARIN24 Darcy Basford (12H) and Jessica Warren (12H) HOUSE CAPTAINS
Hirschfeld House has undeniably made its mark this year. What sets our tiger pack apart is our unparalleled spirit and the willingness of every tiger to get involved. Our enthusiasm throughout the year has skyrocketed and we are so proud of how far our orange family has come. We kicked off the year with a roaring House Party, based on the theme of ‘24 ‘Carrot’ Magic’. It was amazing to see every tiger decked out in orange and gold outfits for a wonderful afternoon full of games, food, and fun. That afternoon, we saw every girl embracing our motto— Unleash your Roar in 2024 #ROARIN24 . This motto was inspired by the top five values that Year 12 Hirschfeld wished to uphold:

Our performance in the Interhouse Choir might not have been successful in terms of the adjudication, but it was a fantastic experience. The dedication of the House across the weeks of preparation really showed on the day. But once again we proved ourselves a dominant force in the pond, winning the Interhouse Swimming Carnival by over 100 points for the third consecutive year. This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every member of Lilley House, stepping out of their comfort zones to participate in—in our opinions—the most competitive Interhouse event of the year. The dedication of our Year 12 buddies, who took on the challenge of leading the Year 7 students, was particularly noteworthy. It has been amazing to see the senior House Group lead the younger girls and help build stronger inter-year connections (a special mention must go to our incredible House Prefects and Service Captains). On Open Day, our charity stall was a significant highlight. We chose to support Lily House—a charity dedicated to helping young women in need on the Sunshine Coast— selling our signature fudge. In its second year, the sale of ‘sludge’ was also a massive success. Our towel drive conducted earlier in the year was also a resounding success, with every House Group coming together to support Lily House. This initiative underscored our commitment to making a positive impact on our community. What made this year particularly special was the formation of strong connections between students from different year levels. This sense of unity and support across all Year-levels fostered a more inclusive and supportive environment within Lilley. These bonds have strengthened our House and will continue to be a foundation for future success. Scarlett Bennett (12L) and Isabella Kim (12L) HOUSE CAPTAINS
Lilley
Lilley House stands out for its close-knit, competitive, and fun-loving community. This year's motto— Leap, laugh, love Lilley! #TaketheL —encapsulates this spirit perfectly. It emphasises our commitment to providing a supportive environment for every member of the House and enjoying our more spirited moments at Interhouse and Intrahouse competitions. One of the highlights of the year was the House Party, themed ‘Eat Your Greens.’ The vegetable eating competition between each Year-level brought out everyone’s competitive side (shoutout to our winner Maddie Skarott (11L)). This light-hearted competition showcased the unique blend of camaraderie and competitiveness that defines Lilley House.

Our 2024 Mackay House motto— Bright in White, Bring the Might #MackayMight —was taken above and beyond by every single Mackay sister this year. The word ‘bright’ encapsulated our spirited and supportive culture, and we proved our ‘might’ by showing up to every event making Mackay the House to beat. Kicking off this year with our disco themed House Party, Mackay embraced the motto and were bright in white dressed up as disco balls, wizards, and of course, angels! Our first chance to showcase our might to the other Houses was at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival in Term 1, where we placed fourth. At Interhouse Choir, we sung our hearts out to Unwritten , where our truly angelic voices carried us to second place! We couldn’t defend last year’s Interhouse Cross Country win due to the rain, but Mackay remained mighty in Interhouse Athletics. The year couldn’t have ended on a brighter note, as our Mackay sisters jumped, threw, hurdled, and ran their way to countless victories dressed up bright in white and without a doubt bringing the might . We couldn’t be prouder of all our Mackay sisters for their spirit, teamwork, and pride which shone throughout the year. They truly embodied what it means to belong to Mackay House.
Mackay sister, Gina Savage (2012). Gina was diagnosed with melanoma at only 20 years old and dedicated her life to raising awareness about sun safety and the importance of regular skin checks. Sadly, Gina lost her long and brave fight against melanoma midway through 2023. In tribute to her inspiring legacy, Mackay united to bake our signature cupcakes for Open Day to continue to raise money. We cannot be more grateful for all the Year 12 leaders for working together to make this year the best yet! And honestly, words could never convey the love and gratitude we have for our Head of House, Ms Ruth Jans—the brightest and might-iest of them all! For the rest of our Mackay sisters, whilst we say goodbye to 2024, the ‘rest is still unwritten’ for Mackay House, and we know that every Mackay angel will continue to foster the spirit and love that truly defines Mackay House! This year, our motto for O’Connor House was: Better together than apart, maroon octopi’s our hearts . This motto encompasses our key House goals in 2024 of unity, belonging, and spirit, which we have endeavoured, at every opportunity, to implement. One of the highlights of our year was the House Party, where girls embraced our theme of Queensland and were decked out in maroon outfits ranging from sea creatures to NRL players. This provided an opportunity for girls across grades to bond in their displays of House spirit while participating in fun games and enjoying delicious pizza. Later in the term, the girls showed their maroon colours at Interhouse Swimming Carnival, with House Groups making posters to support our amazing swimmers who represented the octopi. In Term 2, the true might of O’Connor spirit was displayed in Interhouse Choir, with every girl approaching rehearsals with enthusiasm and dedication. Our rendition of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida — that was topped off by two soloists— secured us third place overall. In 2024, we continued O’Connor’s legacy of supporting our House Charity, The Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation. Every girl baked brownies to raise money for this important foundation, which were sold on Open Day by the Year 11s with the help of our Service Captains.
This year, with the help of our Sports Captains, we established a new maroon
O'Connor initiative of O’Connor Ironwoman. This is a competition between year levels to foster passion, and create extra motivation with point rewards for attending carnivals as well as other O’Connor events held on House Assemblies. The girls embraced this initiative head-on and from the healthy competition a clear sense of community has been established between House Groups. Looking back on our maroon filled 2024, we could not be more proud of how strong the O’Connor family has grown this year, and we know that every single girl in O’Connor is well and truly a part of the maroon sisterhood. We have
cherished our time as House Captains and we will always hold the bonds we have made during our time as O’Connor sisters close to our maroon hearts. Stella Anson (12O) and

Woolcock Our role as the 2024 Woolcock House Captains was a gift, filling our year with fun memories and new experiences for us and all our Woolcock-atoos! Woolcock House embodies unity, support, and positivity—values we showcased at numerous events this year. We kicked off the year strong with our annual House Party that featured an overload of polaroid photos, a buffet of treats and pizzas, and a dance competition where the girls had a blast and set an exciting tone for the year ahead. This energy carried through to the Interhouse Choir and the Interhouse Swimming and Athletics our ability to always look on the bright side, just like sunflowers turning to face the sun. An initiative Year 12 Woolcock has implemented this year—with the aim of encouraging participation and attendance at Interhouse events—is the ‘Woolcock Cup.’ This inaugural competition is held between the six Woolcock House Groups, with points awarded to the House Groups with the most attendees and highest participation rates. The House Group with the most points at the end of the year will have their name engraved on the cup and be crowned Woolcock’s most spirited House Group.
Carnivals. Though we didn’t win, the effort and enthusiasm from the House were victories in themselves! On Open Day, 11 Woolcock organised a successful Open Day stall, selling pizzas to raise funds for Richie’s Rainbow Foundation, a Brisbane-based charity supporting childhood cancer research and families. Amid these events, Woolcock House met weekly, combining all Year-levels for fun and unique activities. From guessing teachers' ‘fun facts’ in Kahoot games to Pass the Parcel, every Woolcock-atoo participated creating a special atmosphere for this year. Our 2024 House Motto— Facing the sun, blooming as one —encapsulated the support within our Woolcock community that we've cherished since Year 7. We adopted the sunflower as our symbol, representing our unity and

Foundation Day
The long-standing tradition of Blue Days are the keystone celebrations of school spirit and pride at Girls Grammar. With three Blue Days throughout the year, the highly anticipated festivities are a chance for the whole School to come together and cheer on our athletes and musicians for upcoming events like QGSSSA Swimming, Athletics, Gymnastics and Gala. This year’s Blue Days showcased the strength of the sisterhood’s bonds—or ties, if you will— like never before. Foundation Day is a key event for the Brisbane Girls Grammar School community. Celebrating the School's foundation not only allows us to reflect on our rich history, but to acknowledge and celebrate every person whose efforts have afforded us the opportunities we have today. From our first Principal, Mrs Janet O'Connor, to our current staff, Foundation Day inspires our gratitude for the incredible people who guide our school. This year on Foundation Day, we were addressed by BGGS alumna, Ms Kirby Short (2003). Ms Short spoke to us about the importance of making difficult choices to allow growth. She shared her own experience with difficult decision making and instilled the sentiment that has guided her to make these decisions—never be satisfied; instead, strive for new and empowering opportunities. There are several opportunities throughout the day to celebrate the School and its values. Of course, the Foundation Day cake is a long-standing tradition (it's the School's birthday, after all!) that we all consider an absolute highlight. But also, during assembly,
I showcased and conducted my original choral piece, Roads Go Ever On ; this opportunity is just one of the countless unique experiences that the School provides to students. For this, we are reminded to be grateful for our founders, who set a high standard for celebrating the effort and merits of young women. Overall, Foundation Day was as wonderful as ever. It reminds us to acknowledge and thank those who came before us, whilst embodying their values by cheering on the present and future of the School. Perhaps this sentiment is best said by Svetlana Hadgraft, who penned the lyrics to our school song: ‘inspired by those who show the way, we keep their hopes alive’. Dorothy Rae (12G)
Blue Days
The year started off in full swing with a ‘High School Blue-sical’ themed Blue Day where the student’s embraced their inner Gabriella and Troy and proved that Grammar girls truly are ‘all in this together’. Term 2s ‘Blue-nnings’ theme continued the fun, wih the School seeing an abundance of outdoor and barbeque accessories. We finished the year off with a bang with a ‘ Blue -lympics’ Blue Day in Term 3—just in time for the upcoming Paris Olympics. It’s safe to say that the fun-filled costumes, extensive decorations, and unbeatable spirit proved why the first-place ribbon is always blue. Zinc application, limited edition badges, bum-bags, and lob-a-shot, were successful in raising money for the 2024 School Charity, Cancer Council. From proudly decking out in anything and everything blue to giving it our all on the D-floor, there is no doubt we have lived this year’s School motto, Together Strong, in Blue We Belong , to the fullest. Year 7 Prefects
As Year 7 Prefects we have the pleasure of guiding younger Grammar girls through their first year of secondary school. We visit the girls weekly during House Group organising activities such as Interhouse games and Celebrity Heads, providing organisation tips and skills, and helping them prepare for upcoming events. After being in Year 7 not so long ago ourselves, we understand that starting at a new school— especially one as large as ours—can be very daunting. As Prefects, our goal is to support the girls through this transition and be friendly faces and people the girls feel comfortable approaching. This year, we have had the opportunity to continue the ‘Play at Lunch’ initiative. Coming from primary school, where students often have handball courts and ovals to use during lunch breaks, high school can sometimes feel different. This initiative aims to aid in the transition from primary school, allowing the girls to create connections outside of their House Groups and participate in games during lunch. We also had the opportunity to organise the Year 7s First 50 Day celebration—a significant milestone in their transition to BGGS. The girls and their buddies enjoyed a picnic filled with laughter, games and tasty treats to celebrate the girls first 50 days at Girls Grammar. Lottie Levy (12G) and Tara Mann (12G) Year 7 Prefects
Year 8 Prefects
As Year 8 Hirschfeld Prefects this year, we wanted to create a positive and memorable experience for all of 8H. We wanted to be more than just older peers—we aimed to be friends, and a source of support whenever they needed it. Our goal was to help the students connect with each other and feel like they belonged through organised activities. These helped to build stronger friendships and develop their sense of unity as a House Group. Throughout the year, we teamed up with the House Group Captains to arrange fun activities, games, and competitions. Whether we had an activity planned such as cookie decorating, Kahoot!s , games, or spent the morning chatting, we made sure that each House Group was an inclusive and fun environment that made the start to school just a little brighter. It’s been rewarding watching the Year 8 students grow closer, gain confidence, and develop their own leadership skills. This experience has been more than just a leadership role for us, and we are extremely grateful for the genuine connections and memories we’ve made this year. Pranjal Bhende (12H) and Olivia Stanton (12H) Year 8 Prefects
Year 9 Prefects
Being Year 9 Prefects has been thoroughly enjoyable and highly rewarding, and is an opportunity that we are very grateful for. With Year 9 being the last year of having prefects, we wanted to ensure that all the girls had a really positive experience with us. One way in which we tried to do this was giving them the ability to choose what they wanted to do in House Groups throughout the year. We coordinated with the House Group Captains to plan things for House Group and helped them organise the activities. A lot of activities had the main goal of bringing the House Group together—cookie decorating, a House Group breakfast, and the chocolate game—but also balanced these with some more relaxed House Groups where we were able to chat to the girls individually and in their groups. Our favourite part of being Year 9 Prefects was seeing the girls enjoying the activities we had organised for them and watching the House Group come together to do so. Galentine’s Day
Galentine’s Day in 2024 was a wonderful day—we celebrated our individuality and showcased our genuine love and affection towards our fellow Girls Grammar sisters. As we walked through the white picket fence, vibrant pinks and reds radiated all throughout the School, with Years 11 and 12 going all out and decorating their tables in a bid to be awarded the very coveted ‘Best Decorated Table’ title. Our amazingly talented Student Council, along with a number of other passionate Grammar girls, created specially designed badges for the community to buy, and—for only a small donation—offered artistic face painting.
Thanks to their dedication and enthusiasm, we were able to share beyond the School gates and fundraise for our 2024 School Charity, Cancer Council Queensland. At lunch, we sang and danced our hearts out, accompanied by our amazing student buskers on the pool lawn. The day was also filled with appreciation and gratitude towards our outstanding teachers who have believed, guided, and supported us throughout our BGGS journey. We think it’s safe to say that Galentine’s Day this year was truly a sight for sore eyes! Bridget Ng (12L) and Emma Cribb (12L)
Arts Fest
2024 Arts Fest was bigger and brighter than ever. In line with our motto for this year, we set out to give Arts Fest a GLOW up, with as many artsy events as possible. The two-week celebration began with the Interhouse Choir Competition, which reached an incredible standard this year, with every House performing exciting choralography and harmonies. Our expert adjudicator, Ms Tori Longdon, then led workshops for our Chamber singers and conductors. Throughout the rest of Arts Fest, the School enjoyed busking performances, BGDA and QDU Debates, Art Workshops and more.
Our favourite events were the two Staff-Student competitions. The Staff-Student Comedy Debate was an hilarious hour of very serious discussion of the topic: ‘that AI is the biggest threat to our future’. Despite our Senior A team’s best efforts, the Year 11 Adjudicators awarded the debate to the teacher team. Next, we held the inaugural Battle of the Bands competition, where our beloved Balkan Band challenged a team of teachers. Complete with a Balkan cover of Britney Spears’ Toxic , a rendition of You Belong With Me (by Taylor Staff? Teacher Swift?), and a fantastic diss-track-style rap, this new event was the perfect way to conclude Arts Fest for 2024. Dorothy Rae (12G) and Ella Edwards (12G)
