CREATIVE ARTS THIS YEAR IN CREATIVE ARTS… A rt this year has been full of experimental creation, with Year 7 students delving straight into the foundations of Art by learning drawing, printmaking, and clay techniques, using our new kiln. Year 8 and 9 students explored new creative and imaginative ideas, learning new techniques including lino, sculpture making, stop-motion, and painting, while the Year 10 students were encouraged to discover their style and refine their techniques by making wearable art, and self-portraits. Finally, the Year 11 senior students further honed their skills by working on a range of experiments, culminating in the completely self-directed final Year 12 works reflective of the skills learned throughout the entire Art course. R igour and passion are the best words to describe Curriculum Music in 2023. Year 7 and 8 students explored their connection to music, and identity as musicians, whilst the Year 9 students investigated how music can tell a powerful story and took their first excursion to see Six the Musical . The Year 10 students travelled back in time to explore music through the ages and Blues, before discovering the world of film music. As they started their senior music journey, Year 11 students took a deep dive into the inner workings of music, and investigated how music reflects different cultural, political, and social identities. Year 12 students pushed the limits of their musical journey in the Senior Music Production, Sparks! in collaboration with Nonsemble. T he first assignment in Junior Drama is to lay the foundations, by exploring the various elements of drama, performance skills, expressive voice and movement. As we progress, we learn about styles, conventions and how to craft performances in order to challenge, engage, confront, or educate audiences. Some highlights from this year include our Year 8 students wowing their families at a spectacular showcase night with scenes from the play Stories in the Dark . Our Year 10 students were also blessed with guidance and inspiration from Artist in Residence, Noa Rotem, as they worked to create dynamic physical theatre performances using Greek choral texts from Medea . The Year 12 students also revisited Medea with more skills for their final performance pieces. Drama is immensely valuable as it encompasses various aspects that shape theatre. Drawing inspiration from plays, we analyse how theatre skills can stir emotion and stimulate thought, gaining insights into how better to articulate ideas for our own stage productions through experimentation with sound, projections, and lighting to create diverse atmospheres. Teamwork thrives in Drama, fostering a non-judgemental environment where everyone can contribute ideas. The subject enhances confidence, social
skills, and creativity, which will have immense benefits for the future. Jacqueline Trappett (12O), Lily Smith (12G), and Melissa Bucknill (12W)
