KIRSTEN JACK MEMORIAL LEUKAEMIA COMMITTEE
Though it was a busy year in KJMLC, our many fundraising opportunities have continued to bring much-needed awareness to numerous organisations and initiatives including Canteen, Cancer Council, The Kids’ Cancer Project, The Leukemia Foundation, and Childhood Cancer Support. We also acknowledge that KJMLC could not run so easily without the help of our amazing coordinators for this year: Miss Parry; Ms Holden; and Mrs Nielsen. We appreciate their time and effort in ensuring that our meetings and stalls are organised and well-resourced. Alyssa Godinho (11B)
was a great success with hundreds of students coming to support their peers. The funds raised from the Mother’s Day raffle, cards, and fashion parade were all donated to the various charities we support. At our KJMLC Open Day stall, our ever-popular rocky road sold out quickly, and our Cancer Council-inspired face painting designs were a hit. Ending the year strong, the KJMLC committee worked to cut and fold hundreds of blue and yellow ribbons to sell on Daffodil Day—raising $240 for the Cancer Council—and braided, tied and displayed an array of colourful bandannas proudly for our final event, Bandanna Day, raising money for Canteen.
The Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukemia Committee (KJMLC) was established in 1977 to honour Year 11 student, Kirsten Jack, who sadly passed away from leukemia in 1976. KJMLC aims to raise awareness through School wide involvement in fundraising efforts to fund cancer research and support families dealing with cancer. In 2023, our enthusiastic committee members began the year’s fundraising by selling Mother’s Day cards and tickets for a raffle. The next event showcased the Year 12s, who proudly strutted down the runway in the much-anticipated KJ Formal Fashion parade. The parade
SECOND CHANCE COMMITTEE The Second Chance Committee is a senior Service club for Year 11 and 12 students that supports the Second Chance Programme, founded in 2001 by Marjorie Morton and Dale Spender, which raises funds and awareness for women and children facing homelessness. Term 1 started with the annual Galentine’s Day bake stall, which raised $690. In between events, we educated ourselves about the causes of homelessness in Australia during our weekly meetings. Another change to the Second Chance calendar this year was our support of Brisbane Youth Services on Youth Homelessness Matters Day, where the whole school donated over 60 sleeping bags for youth experiencing homelessness in Brisbane. Homelessness Awareness Week ran through Week 4 of Term 3 and included the annual hot chocolate stall, and an art installation displayed on level 4 of the CLC. The installation interpreted the work of We Are All Homeless by Willie Baronet, and showed the unsettling statistics of homelessness in Australia. Term 4 is always a busy term for Second Chance with the Christmas Gift Giving Tree, and we welcome any Year 10 students who want to join. This drive collects hundreds of gifts for the Bahloo Women’s Youth Shelter, Zig-Zag Young Women’s Resource Centre, and Cherished Home for Young Mums. We thank our coordinators, Ms Gillam, Ms Morgan, and Ms Lu, for their incredible help and support this year. We also thank all our members for all their enthusiasm and generosity as well as the enduring support from the BGGS community.
