YEAR 7 HUMANITIES HUMANITIES

Y ear 7 students began their Humanities studies by investigating the rich and fascinating history of Brisbane Girls Grammar School. They found that despite the School looking very different in 2020 than it did in the past, the core of BGGS and its motto is mostly the same. Olivia King (7G) recalled: L earning about the similarities and differences definitely surprised me the most. It was amazing to see how many similarities there were between the current and past students. I was fascinated by the old uniforms and badges; it was fun to try them on and compare them to the current uniform. In 1875, although there were many similarities; there would have been many differences: Mrs O’Connor would’ve been the Principal, we would have been studying completely different subjects and it would have been a much smaller school. I found learning about the history of Brisbane Girls Grammar School to be a very interesting and enriching experience. Also in Term 1, students began their Geography studies by delving into the concept of place through an investigation of liveability. Students evaluated the liveability of their own local area and how the facilities and services provided effectively meet the needs of its youth. Term 2, while remote learning, students began their second Geography unit entitled Water in the World . Towards the end of term, students took a photograph to illustrate why water is a vital resource to them. It was marvellous to see such creativity as students captured the importance of a finite natural resource. In Term 3 and Term 4, students returned to their History studies with the unit Ancient Societies . They learned about the emergence of the earliest human communities and the discoveries and mysteries of ancient world that followed. Students were asked to create a brochure informing time- travellers about the most remarkable societies of the ancient world. Students also created an Artefact Exhibit which required them to look closely and think deeply about a unique ancient artefact. Year 7 Humanities implored students to ask questions about the world—its past, its present and its future. Although it was most certainly a challenging year, students approached their learning with a real sense of curiosity and wonder; two dispositions that will serve them well with their future Humanities endeavours.
