VISUAL ARTS
T his year the creativity and vision displayed by students across all Year levels in Visual Art has been incredible. We began the year with an art walk in Term 1, where a group of BGGS girls, teachers and parents explored the exhibition, Water, at QAGOMA. This guided tour allowed us to dive in deep and think carefully about the underlying meaning and stories presented by the exhibition’s extraordinary collection of artists. In Term 2 we were able to experience a virtual tour of the Van Gogh Museum, with Head of Visual Art, Mr Pincott, and Manger of Collections, Ms Thornquist guiding us through the exhibition. We also began our first Art Workshop in Term 2, which was followed by a second workshop in Term 4. These workshops focused on printmaking and portrait drawing and called on us to work in groups to create new artworks by experimenting with different art forms and techniques. In Term 3 the Year 9 Visual Art students staged their own exhibition across two levels of the CLC. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year we were not able to stage the usual Year 12 Visual Art exhibitions. However, every student was formally presented with a book documenting all artworks that were created throughout the year, which was a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements of the Year 12 cohort. We hope this can become an annual initiative. Sylvia Wu (12B) VISUAL ART CAPTAIN
Y ear 8 Visual Art has introduced us to a variety of artists and genres. In Term 1 we looked at still life artworks and painted our own using the stimulus ‘precious’. In Term 2 we went on to investigate the work of several artists, beginning with Rosalie Gascoigne. Copying Gascoigne’s technique, we made both digital and tangible collages. We then explored Tom Phillips and his altered book figures, followed by Ellis Gallagher and his tracing of shadows, and then Christian Boltanski and metal figures. In Terms 3 and 4 we got to explore stop motion animation, which was really exciting and fun. Freya Pearn (8H) YEAR 8 VISUAL ART
