HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS
G irls Grammar’s commitment to Health Promoting Schools was established in 1996 to formalise the School’s commitment to health in the community—both internal and external. The purpose of our group is to increase awareness of health issues in our society and raise money for our chosen charity, which this year was the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF). Throughout the year, our club grew to 40 members and it is great to see so many girls promoting health within our School community.
Through our healthy bake sales in Term 2 and Term 3 we sold our popular bliss balls, healthy quiches, and badges, raising $585 for the ACFF. Thank you to all club members and Mrs Leone and Mrs Minuzzo for helping us organise the club and their contribution this year. We hope to continue promoting healthy living through Health Promoting Schools next year! Lauren Chudleigh (10R) and Tia Fitzpatrick (10M)
DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS
D octors Without Borders (DWB) is a service group aimed at raising awareness to the efforts of the international health organisation, Médecins sans Frontières (MSF). Our group met fortnightly to engage in discussions centred on the epidemiological and social aspects that affect the work of MSF. Over the course of this year, we covered various epidemics and health issues being faced around the world. We explored measles and ebola epidemics in the Democratic Republic of Congo, deportation in Latin America, and Syrian refugee camps in the Idlib province. We were also able to briefly analyse COVID-19 and the effects of the pandemic on MSF’s ongoing projects.
As student leaders of DWB, we hoped to engage students during every meeting through various activities, including mind mapping, short MSF videos, and open discussions. Thank you to our wonderful advisors, Ms Bernard and Mrs Urry, for their continual support throughout this challenging year. We hope the group continues with as much passion and popularity in the coming years. Stephanie Burgess (11E), Erin Doan (11M) and Linda Koorts (11M) STUDENT LEADERS
