ATHLETICS

T his year’s Athletics season was slightly modified due to changes to sporting fixtures and competitions in 2020. It was a short season (only 10 weeks), so the team launched straight into training in Week 1, Term 3. Training was held at Jack Cook Memorial Park, allowing both track and field athletes to train together on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, which created strong bonds and we quickly felt like a unified group. The season really would not have been possible without our fantastic Athletics Coordinator, Mrs Greenland, and the many other BGGS staff who organised the lead-up meets at Jack Cook Memorial Park. Two new new coaches—Ms Purdon and Mr Adcock—joined BGGS Athletics this year. The 2020 squad was also coached by Ms Miller, Mr Franklin, Mrs Dabelstein, Mr White, Ms Hotten, Ms Haley, and Ms Clark. Mr Pearce returned to the role of Head Coach this year and our athletes were very excited to have him back. We would like to thank the coaches for their never-ending encouragement, enthusiasm, flexibility, and perseverance in the face of such a unique Athletics season.

The 102nd QGSSSA Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday 17 September at the Queensland Sports Athletics Centre (QSAC). This event was different to past years as the main stadium was used instead of the training stadium and there were no spectators, but nevertheless, the BGGS girls were as spirited and united as ever. Every girl gave it her all when competing. As we reflect on the 2020 Athletics season, we are very proud of how far all girls have come in such a short period and the outstanding team spirit and commitment each member of the squad has demonstrated. Congratulations to all girls and we wish next year’s BGGS Athletics the best of luck. Catherine Fogden (12O) and Amelia Vanderstoep (12L) CAPTAINS

BADMINTON

A lthough this year caused many uncertainties for sports, Badminton was fortunate enough to progress unscathed by COVID-19. As Captains, we had the honour of seeing many girls trial and play to their best abilities for a place in the team. One of our goals for this year was to encourage as many girls as possible to try Badminton. Seeing everyone work together to improve has made us so grateful that we were able to lead this team. Our second goal for the year was for all players to achieve their personal best—whether that be selection into a team or improving a skill—we hope everyone achieved what they aimed for during the season. Our hard work was rewarded with the Senior A, Senior B, Senior C, Senior Dii and 8A all winning the premiership in their respective divisions. Our other teams also performed very well with eight other teams placing in the top three of their division. Special mentioned to the Year 9A team who placed second this year, which was a major improvement compared to last year. None of this would be possible without our wonderful coaches and our dedicated Badminton Coordinator, Mrs Nisbett, and the hard work of each and every girl. To the girls who missed out on a spot in Badminton this year, don’t give up! We encourage you to tryout again next year.

Finally, to the Badminton squad of 2020, we really appreciated your enthusiasm and excitement this season. We hope that you continue to enjoy Badminton as much as we do and once again thank you for a fantastic season. Joanna Hu (12R) and Christabel Huang (12R)
