GALA CONCERT 2020
ode to T he theme for Gala Concert 2020 was Ode to Joy , paying homage to Ludwig van Beethoven. Though the Gala Concert was scheduled for Term 3 at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, due to COVID-19 restrictions it instead became a virtual spectacular. The one-and- a-half hour showcase opened with the Ode to Joy Medley performed by Big Band, Chamber Strings, and Chorale. The massed choir then performed Tundra , featuring soloists Abigail Lui (12O) and Arabella Martin (11M). Symphony Orchestra performed Greater Than by Brian Balmages, followed by the Grammar Singers with the humorous piece Chatterbox , featuring soloist Annabelle Khoo (12W), along with an uplifting performance of Joy , featuring soloists Aravindi Gunawardena (12E) and Abigail Lui (12O). Symphonic Winds gave a nostalgic performance of Frozen highlights arranged by Stephen Bulla. Hannah Kim (12M) and Sophie Shan (11E) shone during Chamber Strings’ performances of Concerto Gross No. 1 for Strings and Piano , and Serenade for Strings op. 6. Weep No More . Chamber Singers then brought a lighter touch to the showcase with their performance of Sigu , and Big Band’s joyous renditions of Make me Smile and Happy made everyone smile! The Gala Concert 2020— Ode to Joy virtual concert concluded with some help from our massed bands and Songs of Joy !
