YEAR 12 CHEMISTRY Y ear 12 Chemistry provides students with the ability to explore the subject in exciting ways and in a real-world context. In Term 1, we completed a study of reaction rates and equilibrium, providing us with a complex but interesting start to our Year 12 Chemistry journey. The following term, our Extended Experimental Investigation (EEI) allowed us to explore and develop skills of investigative processes. In Term 3, we completed an Extended Research Task (ERT) in which we investigated alternatives to conventional car batteries, an important real-world application of our chemistry knowledge. Finally, to finish off the year, we studied organic chemistry in Term 4. Overall, Year 12 Chemistry has provided us with an enjoyable and stimulating experience, particularly through the many exciting in-class experimental investigations we completed throughout the year. YEAR 12 BIOLOGY Y ear 12 Biology has been highly rewarding. We studied numerous topics including genetics, biotechnology and evolution. Due to the constantly developing nature of the subject, our unit maintained a strong focus on topicality and evaluation of biological issues and how the content we learn is subject to innovation and growth in the future. Our experimental unit allowed us to explore and carry out various recombinant DNA techniques including genetic transformation of bacteria, protein electrophoresis and DNA electrophoresis. A Term 3 excursion to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute allowed girls to listen to thought-provoking seminars on parasites and the development of vaccines. The excursion also comprised a tour of the world-class research labs and provided us insight into the world of biomedical research. Georgia Power (12O)
YEAR 12 PHYSICS Y ear 12 Physics took students on a thought-provoking journey to extend their knowledge of the physical world which surrounds them. Under the guidance of Mr Allinson and Dr Stephens, we traced the footsteps of the discoveries behind what we know of the universe today. Term 1 started with the intricacies of electricity found in our everyday lives. In discovering the details of what lies behind the power plug, students were able to scratch the surface of electrostatics and magnetic field effects. The most rewarding task was completed in Term 2. The Extended Experimental Investigation assessment piece allowed students to explore areas of physics outside of the curriculum, expanding their knowledge and curiosities to capacities beyond the classroom. Students were required to extend themselves to attain quantitative solutions to complex and practical problems. In Term 3, students studied some of the most fundamental and greatest physics discoveries of all time. Students broke down how the atom itself was found, all the way to dissecting the discovery of nuclear radiation and its developing uses in our modern world. In a fast pace and ever-growing field such as Physics, the applications of our studies will undoubtedly stretch into every facet of our future. Lucia Pafumi (12H) YEAR 12 SCIENCE 21 S cience 21 contains so many exciting and real-world applications of Science. We explored various fields of Science which included both the practical and theoretical components of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Term 1 focused on nutrition and explored the chemistry surrounding foods. In Term 2, we explored forensic science where we were able to complete many practical activities, including solving a murder scenario. It taught us how science is used in the criminal field. Term 3 focused on the physiology of fear and the physics of theme parks. The theory taught us how biology and physics are fundamental components of our everyday living. In Term 4 we studied how we could live on a different planet. Overall Science 21 was an extremely interesting subject which explores so many new fields. We have enjoyed every lesson.
