2019 School Magazine

DA VINCI DECATHLON T he da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. During the competition, teams of eight students compete across 10 disciplines: Engineering; Mathematics; Science; Code Breaking; Art and Poetry; English; Ideation; Creative Producers; Cartography; and General Knowledge. Da Vinci Decathlon requires teams to work collaboratively and cultivates a learning environment in which mistakes are learning curves and creativity and imagination are vital. The da Vinci Decathlon is a wonderful opportunity to further students’ learning outside the classroom and to foster strong teamwork and communication skills. This year, Girls Grammar entered five teams from Years 7 to 11 that competed across two days. The theme for 2019 was ‘Landscapes’. The teams performed admirably with four placing in the top three in at least one of the disciplines. Congratulations to all girls and a special mention to my team comprising Tiarne Graves (11L), Abbey Grice (11E), Lua Jarrah (11B), Charlotte Robinson (11B), Matina Samios (11W), Bridgette Watkins (11R) and Ashley Zhang (11O), on placing first and being named the 2019 Queensland State champions. Well done to the Year 9 Team who placed third overall. Eva Seet (11B)
