VISUAL ART

Visual Art is an extremely rewarding subject that provides Grammar girls with an outlet for creative expression. This year, girls in Year 7 tried their hand at multiple art forms from painting to stop-motion, while Years 8 to 10 students experimented with portrait painting, charcoal drawing and the reconstruction of famous paintings in a modern context. Year 11 and 12 students created thought-provoking works that investigated the concepts ‘What it means to be human’ and ‘The fabric of life’. Student work was proudly displayed at various exhibitions at the School throughout the year. Outside the classroom, there were several opportunities to get creative at Girls Grammar. There was the new initiative of the

Drawing Club and Art Workshops that gave students a chance to try activities including pendant carving and paper marbling. Earlier in the year, students visited the Philip Bacon Gallery to view an exhibition of works by Australian female painters. The Art Faculty also conducted art walks to Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art. A highlight was the Patricia Piccinini Art Walk, where we saw Piccinini’s weird, wacky and wonderful art which explores the concept of being human in an age of biotechnology and genetic modification. All in all, it has been a fantastic year for Art. Clare Gordon (12E)
