SHORT ‘N SWEET DRAWING The Short ‘n Sweet Drawing Club occurs Monday lunch times Weeks 2, 3 and 4 of every Term. Enrolments are taken afresh every Term and each Term introduces a new media and technique for members to try. Across the three lunchtimes, each member makes one small drawing which might, if the student choses, become part of a mini exhibition displayed for the rest of Term. Shells were the subject for this year. Media and techniques introduced were Pen and Ink (Term 2), Watercolour (Term 3) and Coloured Pencil (Term 4). The small size of each work is designed to give each student a fun, light taste of each medium without the burden of time required for larger projects. The Club is open to students from any year level and no art experience is required. Ms Hollie Hollie CREATIVE ARTS TEACHER

UNITED NATIONS CLUB

Brisbane Girls Grammar School's United Nations (UN) Club has had an eventful year. In the wake of the American Presidential election, human rights have been dominating headlines. The world has had to acclimatise to massive changes in foreign policy, shifts toward identity politics and impending changes in national legal standards. Amidst the ‘Trump anxiety disorder’, it appears the media has neglected pressing conflicts, issues and human rights violations. The 'Trump mania' has taken the spotlight over other long term problems like war and environmental catastrophe. This year, the UN Club strove to leave no topical, international issue untouched. We are a group of open-minded, politically aware and passionate students who dedicate a lunchtime fortnightly to further our knowledge of worldly issues by watching documentaries, reviewing articles and discussing the news. Open Day 2018 was our opportunity to spread awareness of the UN Club in an innovative way. We set up interactive activities that introduced participants to the unethical working conditions on foreign cocoa plantations and encouraged others to brainstorm how they can contribute to achieving the UN’s official 17 sustainable development goals by 2030. Our goal this year was to encourage critical thinking and identification of bias in the media to produce a more informed and aware community. We hope that we have achieved our goal, and it is with bittersweet emotion we pass on our role as UN Club Captains to the next cohort of bright-eyed intellectuals.
