OL OCK

WOOLCOCK-ATOOS 2016 has proven to be another fabulous year for Woolcock House! Woolcock’s motto this year was ‘Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind,’ which is a quote from the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch. This sentiment intertwined with the Student Council’s motto ‘Blue unity creates opportunity,’ and created a metaphorical tapestry of warmth and harmony that has blanketed the House. Both mottos accentuate the importance of camaraderie and inclusion, which has been displayed throughout the year in Woolcock with warmth, humour, and a comforting familiarity between students. Of course, all of this could not have been possible without the leadership of our Head of House, Mrs Ross. At the beginning of the year, #blunity was introduced into the vocabulary of every Grammar girl, as well as half of Brisbane’s population. The Woolcock-atoos have constantly exhibited #blunity throughout the year: from the Interhouse events like the Cross Country, Swimming Carnival, Athletics, and Choir Competition; to a variety of House-based events like the House party, breakfasts, and competitions; and also whole school events like Open Day, Blue Day, and various fundraisers. The concept of #blunity was to unite all Grammar girls and their differences through a common bond, a sense of Girls Grammar pride. Furthermore, these spirited events provided an opportunity for every student and teacher to don their brightest yellow and show their Woolcock unity. This year, our youngest Woolcock-atoos, our Year 7s were welcomed with open arms into Woolcock. Under the wings of their prefects, they have developed into becoming the jewels of Woolcock. They have exceeded all expectations and are more enthusiastic than we could have ever hoped, as shown by their everyday efforts and general kindness towards everyone. Knowing that Woolcock will one day be under the control of these young girls, it is safe to say that the House will be in good hands. We hope that they have enjoyed their first year as much as we have enjoyed having them join us. In spite of the intensity of Term III, the Year 11s rose to the challenge of managing and creating a gorgeous Open Day House stall brimming with bright yellow House spirit. Their flawless execution of their ‘Cheese Toasties’ stall not only catered for a delightful dinner but also for the cravings of every sweet tooth with their exclusive ‘Nutella Toastie’. The money raised on the night will be donated to our 2016 House Charity, The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. From this experience, the Year 11 Woolcock warriors developed their teamwork skills which they will undoubtedly carry through into their final year at Girls Grammar. The Year 9s also demonstrated their keen interest in service by holding a fabulous bake stall for the Year 9 World Vision child.

As Term IV draws to an end, the Year 12 leaders are excited to spread their wings and leave the comfortable nest that is Brisbane Girls Grammar School. Through all the challenges, each and every girl has learnt valuable lessons, forged incredible friendships that they will cherish forever and will continue to grow as they follow their dreams into the wider community. We believe that the values instilled in us during our time in this home away from home, that is Woolcock and BGGS, will resonate strongly in every senior as they begin their journey into the outside world. We believe that this year, every Woolcock-atoo has achieved their highest aspirations whether it be academically, socially, within the community, musically or athletically. As we say farewell to yet another incredible year, we encourage the girls to continue to aspire towards their dreams and to raise their crest to be their best.
