The music students’ dedication at weekly rehearsals and an all-day sound-check ensured a successful and truly amazing twentieth Gala concert, and every single girl – whether they were singing or playing – should be extremely proud of themselves. It is unbelievable that the music resonating around that UQ hall was being produced by 12–17 year olds! A very special congratulations must also go to all thirty-one soloists who displayed an outstanding level of skill and dedication in rehearsals and the concert. Performing as a soloist in such a prestigious and large production is terrifying and exhilarating, and every soloist did an outstanding job. Outstanding solos featured included Fiona Qiu (12R) performing Zigeunerweisen by Pablo de Sarasate with Chamber Orchestra, Linnea Cain singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Harold Arlen with Big Band, and Tokiwa Onoda (12E) playing Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin with Symphony Orchestra. Smaller ensembles were also outstanding, featuring the saxophone quintet performing Cantina Band from Star Wars and a groovy vocal ensemble, Tango, singing Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and string quartet playing Incantation by David Hicken. A huge thanks must go to Mr Sullivan and the dedicated creative and patient music staff who work tirelessly to make sure everything is in place for this grand event. The Gala concert is truly a community event where staff, students, and parents work closely together to ensure the most outstanding product possible. It is one of the most anticipated events on the School’s calendar, and this year’s tremendous Gala Concert certainly lived up to its name – it was absolutely Out of this World .
