COMPUTATIONAL AND ALGORITHMIC THINKING COMPETITION On Tuesday 22nd March, thirteen girls took part in the Computational and Algorithm competition run by the AMC. This competition tests for computer programming potential through the nine questions that had to be completed within an hour. However, it was not necessary for students to have any previous knowledge or experience in programming. We were tested on our ability to perform procedures, use logical thinking and we were challenged through problems that included the identification and application of algorithms. It was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience for all of us and we are so grateful for this opportunity as we wouldn’t normally be given a chance to demonstrate or learn many of these skills in the school curriculum.

AUSTRALIAN INTERMEDIATE MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD On Tuesday 6th September, three keen mathematicians from Years 9 and 10 competed in the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad. This four-hour competition builds on the knowledge and skills the girls have developed through the Maths Challenge for Young Australians Challenge and Enrichment Stages. The girls involved are to be congratulated on their effort and persistence.

MATHAPATTA Mathapatta was an enjoyable and engaging experience for everyone who attended. We enjoyed taking time away from the desks and chairs in the classrooms at school, and replacing them with cushions in the dorms at the School’s Marrapatta Memorial Outdoor Education Centre. We learnt many new and interesting concepts during the camp; however, we found we had the most fun applying maths to solve problems in the physical world. The ‘Amazing Race” the staff set up for us is one example. We had to use our knowledge of maths to solve problems to gain clues, which led us on a course around Marrapatta. This was extremely fun, as we were able to use different methods to solve a variety of problems, while

meeting new people in Year 9 and 10. As Year 10s, we were able to take part in the ‘human pendulum’, which is a section of the high ropes course. This was a fascinating experience that showed us how we can find a formula relating to data we have collected. Mathapatta was a challenging, yet enjoyable camp that allowed us to experience many new topics that we would not have learned in an ordinary classroom. We would definitely recommend this camp to any girl who enjoys maths and likes to challenge herself, as it is an incredible learning experience and a great opportunity to expand your horizons.
