2016 School Magazine

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY The Digital Photography Club is involved in a wide range of school activities such as sports carnivals, Blue days and many other

events such as Valentine’s Day, Drama productions and Open Night, thus making it an integral part of the Girls Grammar community. The students within the club have actively been

working on refining their photography skills so that they are able to create and capture beautiful moments at ‘the School’ throughout the school year. The girls are encouraged to join photography competitions and attend photo shoots with which their camera and editing skills are endorsed and shared with the wider community to enable

others to view their work. We love taking photos for events and it can be seen that the School enjoys the photos too at times sharing them through the School Facebook page and acknowledging the efforts of the students anywhere from Years 7 to 12. The photographic capabilities of the members are supported by the wide range of cameras and lenses we are able to try out and use within the Club with supervision.

UN CLUB Girls Grammar’s UN Club is a discussion group that has met fortnightly throughout this year. In a student-led forum, girls from Years 10 to 12 have investigated current events and ongoing world issues. We began with trying to understand the source of the world refugee crisis, by looking into the various impacts of radical Islam in the Middle East, Europe and Australia. This led us to explore issues such as Australia’s current refugee detention policy, our attitudes towards religious minorities and the global problem child labour and free trade. This year has been a great opportunity for members to share their viewpoints with girls their own age, while broadening their own perspective on world events.

SONGWRITER STUDIO Songwriter Studio is an activity that BGGS holds throughout the whole year. This is an amazing environment for the girls to share new ideas and to refine their songwriting skills in preparation for the Songwriter Showcase in Term III. This showcase was held on BGGS Open Day, where many girls performed their original songs in front of an amazing crowd of newcomers to the School as well as friends and family that came to listen and support. To have an opportunity to perform in front of an audience is a challenging but also an incredible experience to boost confidence and to present a piece of music that has been worked on for many months. An extremely talented student Isabella Lyons also gave a powerful and engaging performance on Assembly with some Year 12 string players. These girls put a lot of practice and time into working together to present such an exhilarating performance, which in the end led all students to jump out of their seats in appreciation of such amazing talent. This year, being in Year 10, Songwriter Studio has inspired me to write more music, as students encourage and inspire one another to be more confident in exposing their original work. Songwriter Studio is also a great place to get away from school work for at least an hour and write music, which is such an enjoyable experience.
