Enthusiasm, teamwork and lots of lollies created a very successful 2015 basketball season! This year’s vision for basketball saw the girls working hard, supporting their teammates, and taking an interest in other games besides their own. This year’s large cohort of basketball players welcomed many new additions to all age groups, including our new Year 7 and 8s. These young and spirited athletes were always excited and eager to learn and their hard work really paid off, with the 7Bs winning the premiership. Because our home basketball court was being re-built during the season, most home games were played at the Gap State High School as well as a few at Brisbane Grammar School. Although this presented a few organisational challenges, we are happy to say that it didn’t affect our team spirit and support.

The BGGS cricket season in 2015 was very successful and enjoyable for all involved. We started the season with a record number of participants, allowing us to enter six teams in the QGSSSA competition. We were especially pleased to have a huge number of Year 7 and 8s join us this year — the future of Grammar cricket is in good hands. The season was punctuated by a series of exciting events. The first was an opportunity to train at the National Cricket Centre, where the cricket girls were able to hone their skills using state-of-the-art equipment. It was great to experience the environment in which professionals train on an everyday basis. The next was Pink Stumps Day. Unfortunately the weather made games impossible. However, through a bake stall we managed to raise $380 in support of the McGrath Foundation. Our donation will go towards placing McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia and will assist in raising awareness about the disease. This year would not have been nearly as successful without the commitment of the coaches, who invested their effort and expertise to help us improve our skills and knowledge of the game. We would also like to extend our thanks to the scorers and managers who put up with our constantly changing batting and bowling orders. To our parents, thank you for coming out each week and acting as our taxis to and from training and games. Your support is always positive and we couldn’t perform as well without you! Finally, a huge thank you to Mr Lanning, without whom the season would not have run so smoothly. He invested so much of his time and love for cricket in this season, and it showed in the success of our teams.

Last year’s captains introduced a Pink Day and a Supporters Day, so this year we decided to integrate the two, becoming Pink Supporters Day. This day was successful in raising more than $100 which was donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. It was an exciting event filled with pink basketballs, pink ribbons and pink food, while also making a positive contribution — raising awareness of a very worthy cause. The great success we experienced this season must largely be attributed to coordinator Mr Fogarty and his hard work. His organisational skills and passion for the game meant that everything ran smoothly and the players could fully enjoy themselves. Lastly, to the basketball girls, thank you for an amazing season. We hope to see you all continuing to participate in the sport we love.
