CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES ATHENE JOSEFINE GANKO (12R)
2015 was another engaging and though-provoking year of Athene. Athene is a discussion group made up of Year 11s and 12s from Girls Grammar and Boys Grammar. Membership is by invitation, with teachers nominating Year 11 students who demonstrate a willingness to express their opinions, and an interest in current affairs. The club meets every few weeks with papers presented each meeting by Year 12s on a topical or ethical issue of their choice. The whole group discusses the paper, which results in stimulating, and often heated debate. The evenings usually begin at 6pm with two papers, followed by mingling over tea, coffee and biscuits, and a third paper to finish. There has been a diverse range of topics this year, from republicanism, to women in the military, and from rape culture, to capital punishment. The opportunity to put our opinions forth in an open, intellectual environment, while also hearing from a range of both male and female perspectives is a privilege that every Athene member relishes.

ART WALKS ZOE KECK (12M)
Every term, an Art Walk is hosted by the School at the Gallery of Modern Art at Southbank, open to students, family and friends. Ms McKean and Ms Thornquist, who is a tour guide at GOMA on weekends, conduct these morning walks through the gallery. Various exhibitions are visited during each tour, and it is very interesting to hear a narration by either teacher to enhance the understanding of each artist and their work. Personally, these Art Walks opened my eyes to the possibilities of art and the ideas behind the works. They have revealed many techniques and concepts, which I have not considered before. These Art Walks are thoroughly enjoyable and I definitely recommend them if you are interested in art or history.
