GEOGRAPHY Geography in Year 9 was significantly different from Year 8, as we were introduced to many new concepts and ideas of the world around us, while still studying the physical elements of our Earth. We studied topics such as biomes, the developing and developed world, food security and interconnections between people and technology. Geography this year has been extremely interesting and enjoyable, especially as it gives us a better understanding of the way the world operates. SHARADA ANANTHARAMAN (9B) AND SYLVIA KING (9L)

On 24 April, the Year 10 Geography class took a field trip to observe the coastal processes of our nearby coast and Wave Break Island. While at the Gold Coast, we were taught about the history of the beach and all the alterations that were done to enhance the beach’s welfare. We were also informed about the future plans of the Gold Coast Council, which have been cancelled for now due to the environmental implications that could have been caused. We would highly recommend choosing geography as a subject as it has enhanced our worldly knowledge, and given us good insight into environmental and social wellbeing.

Throughout the year geography has been full of wonderful opportunities to expand our knowledge on the three areas we have studied: Food Security, Biomes and Interconnections. During these units we have enjoyed many aspects of our learning journey, including learning about severe food insecurity around the world; the different biomes, their functions and contribution to the planet; and the digital divide and virtual revolution. We have had many in-depth discussions on different problems that need addressing in everyday society around the world, some of which we were oblivious to. Geography has helped us make sense of our world by showing the connections between people and places. Transitioning from Year 9 to 10 we look forward to delving deeper into new geography concepts. We both thoroughly enjoy taking geography as a subject. Geography has really broadened our

understanding of the nature of the problems going on in the world and what causes them and has allowed us to think independently about ways in which they could be improved. Geography has also improved our understanding of issues within Australia, such as climate change. Through very interesting class discussions and projects we have been able to freely form opinions and encourage each other to seek further insight into matters than concern us.
