By ' LILY I\/10!^'GAN ' LUCA^ I had never really got on well with the other nobles' children. I found them rigid. boring and stuck up. I much preferred the company of my adventurous friends who were all low borns. .. and my brother. .. Lucas As childish as it sounds. Lucas was my best friend. We would do everything together. Every day. we used to steal food from the kitchens and hide it away. When it came to our shared History lessons, we would tolerate the teacher's monotone droning until he fell asleep and sneak out over the garden wall with our stolen goods. Most of the time. we would visit our lowborn friends. but sometimes. Luke would take me to the markets and buy me the most amazing little things. it was like a ritual. and when we did see our friends. we always had many adventures. Among them, was a girl called Annie Cooper. She seemed more educated than most of the commoners, even though she was just a stable hand Lucas was madly in love with her and he learned to play the lute so he could write songs for her. He took her to the moonlit ruins and sang to her in the darkest hours when nobody else would hear He was always careful that our parents never heard about their relationship. We were sure that our mother would be fully accepting. but our father was a completely different matter. He had the olden traditions instilled into his blood. so the thought of a relationship between peasant and nobility was simply unheard of

The further back I went. the wilder the weeds and thistles grew, obscuring the stone crosses and crooked headstones
'You looking for someone?' said Welter
'Oh no. just looking, ' I said
I couldn't tell Welter the truth. I don't know if it was for my sake or his but I just couldn't The truth is. Waiter 15 my brother. or. was my brother. Welter was my twin brother; he had died from a cold when we were just seven But ever since then he's still been with me, I don't know if it's his spirit or just my mind playing tricks on me, but my Welter makes my day easier to get through
