Dreams - 20n Gala Concert "0" This year's Gala theme, Dreams, was interpreted conceptualIy; rather than thinking of dreams in a literal sense the Music Department interpreted dreams as inspiration al, even aspiration al, goals that people could Identify with and aspire to. The theme also allowed for a variety of repertoire to be performed from all genres of music. Weeks of intense rehearsals and practice CUIminated in a memorable night for every musician, director and audience member.
The night began with a small jazz combo, arranged by Mr Paul Kucharski, playing an arrangement of The Mama and the Papas' Dream a Little Dream with Georgia Hahn on vocals and guitar, We ridy Newman on double bass and Sarah Farnsworth on trumpet This was followed by Chamber Orchestra, directed by Mr Mark SUIlivan with Concertinaster Debbie Lee, who produced a beautiful rendition of Tchaikovsky's Elegie from his Serenade for Strings The audience was then wowed by a brilliant solo from Debbie Lee, playing Sarasate's romantic ZigunerweiSen (Gypsy Alls) Never before at a Gala Concert have the students from Chamber Singers and Grammar Singers performed together on stage! With 'whirlies' and bells to assist in creating a dream-like effect, the singers swept the audience up and away with an atmospheric piece, Shall We Dream Chamber Singers, conducted by Mr Paul Holley, were at their best, delivering an Intoxicating performance of Buttedwing and a beautiful arrangement of Somewhere Over the Rainbow Conducted by Mr Paul Holley, the combined Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School choir, Grammar Singers, hypnotised the audience. They began with Australian composer Dan Walker's stunning piece, Momheus, telling the story of the ancient Greek god of dreams. The famous jazz piece, Blue Moon, created 'a dream in our hearts' and featured a groovy scat by isabel Stewart, and to conclude, Grammar Singers mastered the a capella piece All 15 One and One 15 All The Big Band blew the audience away with their three-piece set Dare to Dream, originally played at the 2000 Olympic Games, was played with equal skill and vigour. The girls also played Van Morrison's Moondance, and an awe-inspiring arrangement of the famous Led Zeppelin hit Stairway to Heaven concluded their impressive performance The second half opened with the inspiration al Olympic Fanfore played by Symphonic Winds and it was followed by the powerful and engaging Belceuse and F1hale by Stravinsky. America from West ^de Story was energetic and a real audience pleaser to conclude

The Grammar Community Choir was back in 2011 with many generations of Grammar families and friends singing with joy and conviction. Va Pensi'ero was the audience favourite but the addition of tuned wine glasses created great curiosity and an eerie atmosphere In a piece based on a poem by William Blake called And in the Evening Symphony Orchestra both challenged and exceeded audience expectations as they produced a masterful rendition of Inchon, a piece that depicts the clash between western and oriental culture In the 1950 Battle of Inchon.
