As Danny waited, he heard a faint scuffle, then a scream. The voice sounded - familiar, almost. He ran down a dark alley where the scream seemed to have originated and there, in the shadows, her skin bleeding and bruised lay Abbey his ex-girlfriend. A tall man with Iank and untidy blonde hair loomed over her. As Danny stepped forward out of the shadows, the man looked up, grabbed the girl's purse and ran away Danny approached the girl carefully, noticing her scraped, bleeding body heaving in silent sobs. As he reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder, she whipped away from him as if his hand was a hot iron. "Don't touch me!" she shouted, and emitted an earpiercing scream A moment later, his date, Kate, appeared, followed by an alarmed-looking shopkeeper. As the look on Kate's face changed suddenly, from inquiry to horror, Danny knew this situation would be a hard one to explain. "Look, Kate, this isn't the way it looks ..." he started. At that moment, the sound of a police siren was heard and a sudden burst of light filled the alley, as the two police cruisers charged around the
I^'^' ^'771V^ Rain streamed lazily across the harsh grey sky as the silhouette of a boy danced across the footpath. As he floated along on that cold, wet night, a million thoughts were going through his head. Why had Kate asked him out? He had, after all, dumped her best friend, Abby, not a fortnight ago. As he splashed through the puddles, he pondered these disturbing thoughts. A light flicked on and off as if struggling with life, until, with one desperate sigh, it threw the street into darkness. Much later, Danny and Kate emerged from the theatre into the dimly-lit street. "Good movie, eh?" said Danny enthusiastically "Yeah, " said Kate dully, "alright. " There was a strained silence and the light drizzle of rain was the only sound accompanying the pair of echoing footsteps along the street. "I'm thirsty, " Kate exclaimed suddenly. Danny sighed as he fumbled through his pockets for some change, handing her a few loose coins. "I'lljust wait here, right?" Danny called after her. This date wasn't turning out to be much fun, he thought
