O’Connor House
The Mighty Maroons
He is round and large, has eight legs, a beak for a mouth and lives at the bottom of the ocean. His relatives may be a delicious delicacy often seen on the menus of the very best restaurants, but to us, Otis (our maroon octopus mascot) is more than just seafood. With his face clearly visible on all our House t-shirts, the mighty maroons have led a very exciting year which has included many initiatives. On January 24, O’Connor welcomed its newest members to the House with the time honoured tradition of chocolate - and lots of it! The Year 8s joined with their buddies in a number of games and tours, ensuring that they would feel more comfortable in their new surroundings. This was closely followed by the first major event of the year - the House Party, where everyone let their hair down. Dressed from head to toe in maroon, the girls played many games such as blind-fold donut eating, and of course there was a plethora of prizes, pizza and plenty of cake! In 2005 the Interhouse Drama Competition held a new twist, with our Drama Captains, Edwina Howie (12O) and Kate Bird
(12O), directing a cast from Years 8, 9 and 10. The directors and cast did remarkably well in their production entitled Year Nine are Animals . We have tried to bring something new to every Friday House Assembly, including lolly hunts, quizzes and relaxation sessions, but our most important initiative was a visit by five very cuddly dogs accompanied by their owner, who spoke to us about the East Timor Scholarship Fund. O’Connor House has decided to fundraise for this worthwhile organisation making it our main charity this year. Thank you to all O’Connorians, old and new, who have helped to make 2005 an exceptional year. Alison Rae & Elise Connor HOUSE CAPTAINS
