Everyone cares about something
Notice of Development Application: Casaway Shopping Town. The sign greeted her along with the cold metal fences that now blocked off her childhood play area. ‘How could they even think of removing all these trees? Casaway Shopping Town just doesn’t cut it! They can’t cut down all these trees!’ She looked back at the sign to vent her anger at it somehow. Then she realised there was a list of future tenants, starting with Stella Music Records and P.U.N.K Clothing. ‘If they’re going to cut down the trees, they might as well do it for a good cause.’ Kelly turned her back and smiled to herself as she thought of all the things she would buy at the opening. “Do you guys remember there being forests in Brisbane?” The sentence came out before she could stop herself. Though a little surprised their daughter was voluntarily talking, her parents were too eager to answer. “Hmmm, well back in the sixties. Oh Peter, do you remember the first tree protest we went to?” “Of course I do. How could I forget? They wanted to chop down the forest near Toowong for a shopping centre, just as they’re going to do near here in a few weeks. Over near the old quarry, where you used to play, Kelly.” Getting over the fact that her parents had ever protested against anything, Kelly tuned out the rest of her parents’ rambling and reminiscing as she remembered her own childhood, playing in the bush near the old quarry. She had forgotten that patch of wilderness, and now they wanted to chop it down for a shopping centre? ‘It’ll probably be another grocery store. Why do we need another one of them? There’s enough traffic around the place as it is!’ Kelly decided she’d visit the old playground and put a stop to their plans.
