and excitement of debating. The Tournament has been hugely popular with great House support. The instigation of the ‘debating buddy’ system provided additional support to fledgling debaters. 2005 marked a change in the leadership of the debating programme with Mrs Smee assuming the role of Co-ordinator. We would like to thank Mrs Smee for her tireless efforts, infectious enthusiasm and wonderful support. Lauren Humphrey (12G) CAPTAIN

Debating

2005 has been a prosperous year under the expert instruction of Mr Kojima. Many new students from both Brisbane Grammar School and Brisbane Girls Grammar School have joined the club with over twenty regular students attending each week. The students have progressed rapidly from learning the basic strokes to producing longer historical poems written in both the cursive and block style characters. Calligraphy is not merely an exercise in good handwriting but also an important art form of the

Brisbane Girls Grammar School Debating has enjoyed one of its most successful years to date. To progress to the final rounds of the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Competition, teams are required to win at least three of their first four debates. This year, nine of our teams performed exceptionally well to progress to the final rounds of the tournament. With six of our teams reaching the semi-finals and three, the grand finals, we were delighted to be named the Champion School of the QDU 2005 Competition. Such resounding success was not confined to the QDU Competition. Shona Wills (12M) and Lauren Humphrey (12G) were selected as members of the Queensland Schools State Debating Team which became National Champions in August. Lauren was subsequently selected as a member of the Australian Schools Debating Team for 2005. The new Interhouse Debating Tournament for Years 8, 9 and 10 has successfully raised the profile of debating within the School this year. As entrants in the competition could not be current debating team members, many girls could enjoy the pleasure

Thanks to the artistic talents of Mr Kojima’s wife, students this year have been introduced to the art of sumi-e (black ink painting). This is a serene and elegant style of painting with minimal detail and soft flowing lines. Students enjoyed applying their brush skills to produce this exotic and beautiful art form. We are especially privileged to be instructed by Mr Kojima who has recently been elevated to the highest level of achievement in the art of calligraphy. This level of excellence requires many years of dedication and participation in calligraphy contests held at the Ueno Art Gallery in Tokyo. Mr Kojima’s infectious enthusiasm and encouragement have enabled us to achieve well beyond our expectations. Sherlyn Hii (10W)

Orient. The artist’s skill and imagination combine with a high degree of technical skill to produce a work of art and beauty. Students gain great satisfaction from the results of their careful and concentrated efforts. The Calligraphy Club has also given students an insightful experience into Japanese history and culture.

Team for 2005 essentially means that she is the best student third speaker (her specialist position) in Australia, and she is to be sincerely congratulated on this momentous

achievement. Her success follows months of very hard work, involving endless rounds of debates and hundreds of hours of demanding preparation, including weekends and holidays. She is an excellent role model for our debaters. Mrs C Smee CO-ORDINATOR

Chess Club

Brisbane Girls Grammar School 116 This curve was steepest during the tournaments, especially on 17 August when the Brisbane Girls Grammar School team competed in the Interschool Championship at the Marymac Hall, Annerley. Each member played seven games against students from various Brisbane schools and had a lot of fun, whether checkmating or being checkmated. All agree that being part of the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Chess Club has given them a definite edge for when the chess boards come out at home. Kings, queens, bishops and knights do not only reside in History books in the Beanland Memorial Library. At lunchtimes on Wednesday and Thursday, they come out to play when the members of the School’s Chess Club meet to engage in a battle of wits and strategies. The Chess Club was a new addition to the School’s co-curricular activities in 2005 and all members, from Year 8 to Year 12, have enjoyed a rewarding learning curve.

Our success this year is largely due to our great teachers. Mrs Rentz has attended tournaments, organised everyone and always been on hand to solve any little chess dilemmas. Mr Steeples has attended our tournaments, told good jokes, offered superb advice, and made sure that we did not starve. Our coach, Mr Lavercomb, has been inspirational and so supportive. May the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Chess Club continue to flourish and may our opponents always be checkmated. Jacinta Livingstone (9R)
