LIBRARY REPORT >
.^;+o1,01,.-- A librarians work is never done. in a
library as busy as The Beanland Memorial Library, it sometimes seems as if there is always another trolley to shelve, another vertical file to manage, another book to cover. in many ways this is what makes library work challenging and daunting at the same time. At various times students ask to perform volunteer work in the library and 2004 has been no exception. This year there have been three students from Years I I and 12 who have completed their Duke of Edinburgh service requirements in the library by learning the fascinating subtleties of the Dewey Decimal System; how not to be entrapped by the irisidious stickiness of contact; and that you do not have to pay for a gym subscription to get a good workout -Just shelve a trolley of books The library staff members have genuinely appreciated the gift of time that these students have given to them and hope that the students, too, have benefited from the experience
Throughout this year my experiences at the Beanland Library have been challenging, yet rewarding. I have learned many skills, such as reshelving, contacting books and filing Volunteering to help in the library has really opened my eyes and my mind to the world, and to the girls who attend the school INow I understand why the librarians get so annoyed!I I have also learnt all the selfish "tricks" of hiding books and other items in the wrong shelving sections because I now "find' them, and have come to appreciate it when girls tuck in their chairs and return their books correctly But, more importantly I have enjoyed this experience - I had no Idea that the Vertical File section was so diverse, or that there was a ChildrenS Books section! The librarians have been especially kind and understanding. Believe it or not, working in the library is quite taxing, especially on the back muscles 1111, and reshelving books is more tedious and timer on suming than it seems! I really enjoy volunteering my time to work in the
library for my Duke of Edinburgh Award. and it I had more spare time I would do it all againl Students do not have to be Duke of Edinburgh candidates to learn library skills; volunteers are welcomed at any time, especially if they like to learn new skills and be trained to work independently on special prqjects
