>.- The morning sun flooded SylvieS dining room as she and her husband, Robert, sat down for breakfast. Sylvie was a woman of 40 years, with greying brown hair and hazel eyes Sylvie looked like a lovely, kind teacher but her eyes had a wicked sparkle, a dancing fiendish glee. When that sparkle came out, someone was in for it. Sylvie was a psychologist and a good one' There was very little Sylvie didn't know about you if you talked to her for five minutes. Robert, on the other hand, was a banker p ain and sinple. Robert had been very handsome, but years of monotonous routine had turned him into a dull, petty man The pair talked of banal things over the toast Sylvie paid no attention to her husband. She was th'nking of what she was to do that day. Her pride, her garden, kept her quite busy. She was mentally pruning the roses when Sylvie noticed something unusual about Robert. As always he was droning about his position in the company and so on. But never had Rob mentioned that word. Overtime " in sorry what was that, dear?" Sylvie said
"Oh, er I'm doing some overtime today, " Robert hummed and hawed, not expecting this. "Got to, er keep up with the young bucks you know, darling. " Sylvie smiled sweetly her mind racing. What young bucks? The partners of Welling ton & Co. , the bank he worked for were all zomb'es like Rob, sucked dry of youthful vitality. He was lying; it was like a neon sign over his head. She picked up the morning papers, thinking hard "Morning, neighbour! Spare a flower?" "Good morning, Joss. " SylvieS neighbour Joss. was a young blonde mother Joss was a music teacher at the local high school and was very good at it, too Sylvie handed Joss a cr'mson bloom, thinking hard. Was it possible that Rob was cheating on her? She doubted it. Rob didn't have the imagination or the libido to look for an affair Even so "Here, I got these from Chris to mulch your rose bed. 15 something wrong7 You're pruning those roses very vio enty. " Sylvie glanced over the papers Joss had handed her It was some sort of bank news. Vaguely she read a sri'ppet about an accountant getting a promotion. She absently dumped them by her doorstep as she walked indoors for mom'rig tea
Rob rtS snores filled the cool night air Suddenly SylvieS eyes snapped open. Very s owly she crept out of bed a d down stairs, to look at the newsletter Joss had given her S e read the article about the promoti n and looked at a snapshot of the lucky girl. A rather catty looking blonde, with some expensive Jewellery, stared out at her. Eureka, thought Sylvie as she picked up her phone the next morning and made an appo ntment with her Ia^, er SylvieS eyes sparkled as she we t back upstairs Fancy me being neighbours with someone who works for the same bank Rob does, Sylvie thought Sylvie won the divorce case rather easily Rob was in no place to deny anything, as the facts were against him. The huge promotion he had given to the peroxide blonde, Rosy, was no secret and his bank account revealed several large cheques made out to perfume andJewellery shops. Sylvie ended up with the house and has bee happily single for a while now. A happy ending for in earlyI everyone
in her very best, 1950s wife impressio Robert was taken aback, Sylvie noted
Odd, she thought. Normally with the east encouragement he'd go on for hours' SylvieS eyes sparkled
