the head still on the plate, ducks tongue, pigs tongue, deep fried flowers and fluffy nothings, a bread-like cake that You dipped in half caramelised condensed milk Another big difference in the culture is bartering. The first day we went shopping it was like every shop You went to You bartered. As the week went on, we became better and better at this. On the last day I purchased a bag that was 210 Yuan for 50 Yuan On the bus it became evident that their attitude towards road rules was very different from ours. if they wanted to change lanes. they just would. No indicating, 00 checking if someone was there. it wasjust a turn of the wheel This road chaos was the main reason for our police escorts. The police would stop the traffic on the wrong side of the road and we would just drive straight down the wrong side of the main street of Shenzhen. We were not expecting police escorts
The language barrier was not a huge problem as most of the people we met spoke English and if they didn't, the next person in line did. The major difference between here and China apart from the language was their eating habits. In Australia we mostly have three small meals and then two snacks in between these. While we were in Shenzhen we had three huge meals every day. They would just keep bringing food out on plates for You to eat. if You emptied the plate, another one would appear. Another difference with the food was how it was served it was put on large plates on a lazy susan and You picked up whatever You wanted with Your chopsticks and put it into a little bowl and then ate from there. Even when we had a western meal one day, the Chinese were very picky at their meals. reaching over to Your plate to take a piece of food if they saw something on it that they wanted. Also the type of food was very different. We were served chicken with

As the week grew to a close, Danielle and I realised how much we were going to miss the culture, food and people of our week in Shenzhen at the Voyage Towards Friendship 2002. As we were leaving the last thing that was said to us was "Welcome to Shenzhen again and drop in any time" which is a literal translation of their "You're welcome back anytime. " I think I mightjust take them up on it
Another thing that we were definitely not expecting was the press. They were everywhere. People flying into Shenzhen were met by them at the airport. They filmed us doing everything at the Art Gallery. Museum and even at the Beach Carnival Shenzhen must be putting a lot of money into their sister city program because Voyage Towards Friendship 2002 was on the front page of the newspaper most days that we were there. I was on the front page once and inside the newspaper twice as well as being on the N news twice after being interviewed by a film crew
