Mysterious Murderer Renee glanced over her shoulder - the figure swathed in black was still following her. His footsteps had plagued her since she had left home. As the last turn towards her destination neared. she heard the man behind her break into a run. Terrified, Renee sidetracked to the right, fearing foul play. Sprinting across the road. she swung again to the right and emerged in her street Shaking, she rushed up her front steps. entered the house, locked the door and ran to her room where she huddled under the bed. With dawning horror, she remembered her back door was unlocked - she had never bothered with security when she was at home. She crawled out from under the bed to stand face to face with her pursuer. An evil grin contorted his handsome face A knife flashed in his hand as it buried itself in Renee's chest. Her last earthly memory was of his high-pitched cackle as he wiped the knife on her torn shirt Inspector Wilson examined the body of the dead woman. His kind face was creased into a piteous expression. What an awful way to die. he thought. He examined the documents in his hands. Renee Bellard was 21, single. living with her father and a recently sacked employee of Hating Manufacturers. Glancing at the dead body and giving an involuntary shudder. inspector Witson left the vicinity for the privacy of his office So far, Wilson had three possible suspects. Renee's father. ex-boyfriend and boss had either been reported near her home or in her company during the hour before her death. As Mr Bellard lived down the road. Wilson decided to pay him a visit According to Bellard, he was home during the murder. Hearing his daughter scream. he had rushed into her room to find her dead from massive chest wounds. He had directly called the ambulance, afterwards standing by his daughter until the wail of a siren could be heard. As Peter Bellard was clearly distressed, Wilson had been unable to obtain any more information from him Walking out the door. he wondered whether Renee's former boss would have a different version of events Unluckily, Bruce Harding's story didn't shed new light on the murderer. Hating had been involved in a dispute with Renee over an alleged burglary from his confidential office files. They had argued for an hour before Mr Hardng had dismissed his secretary, telling her not to return the following morning. She had left without a backward glance. This information being all that Harding could volunteer, Inspector Wilson thought he might track down Renee's ex-boyfriend to hear his story A young man in his inid-twenties greeted Wilson at Belle's Coffee Shop where a private meeting had been arranged. Daniel Mackenzie was tall, tanned and single. He had broken up with Renee Bellard after she had informed him she had decided to leave town. Not wishing to suffer a long distance relationship fraught with problems, they had agreed it was best they part good friends. Last night. Daniel admitted to visiting Renee to see how she was managing. As he approached her house, he had heard raised voices. Not wanting to disturb anyone, he had retreated but not before he witnessed Renee storming out of the house and, after a minute, her father following suit in a peculiarly discreet manner. Mr Bellard had taken up Renee's trail and slowly melted into the darkness. As Daniel finished speaking. Inspector Wilson said. "That's interesting. " it was 7:00pm and Inspector Wilson approached Mr Bellard's house with caution. He had earlier visited the examiner of Renee's body who had proved his suspicions right - embedded in Renee's chest was a shard of steel with a fingerprint on it matching Peter Bellard's. Wilson had immediately rushed to the murderer's house and was in the act of knocking on his door. It opened to reveal Bellard. tall and ominous. He let Inspector Wilson in without a word As they sat down at the kitchen table, Bellard poured out his story. He had argued with his daughter prior to her death She had discovered he was responsible for her mother's death. The car accident had killed his wife on impact and left him with broken ribs and a motherless daughter. He repeated how after their confrontation. he had followed Renee as she headed for the 00 ice station to report her findings. He was in a blind rage, without his wife, furious that his daughter should accuse him of being a murderer He choked and finally let out a wail of grief as his shoulders began to heave with the realisation that he had killed his only child Inspector Wilson tried to console the distraught man. After an hour he said. "Come Mr Bellard, it's time to go. "
