JAN RILEY
On Friday 10 March 2000 our Archivist, Jan Riley, passed away after a very short illness. Although Jan had only been in the School for just over one year, she had contributed much to the development and consolidation of our archival systems. Jan also helped the Old Girls Association enormously with memorabilia during their Centenary Year last year. As well as her work at BGGS, she was instrumental in the formation of the Queensland School Archives Special Interest Group and the organization of the Archives Conference in Brisbane. Jan had attended BGGS in 1964 and 1965, and was remembered by a number of women who were in her classes during that period, in particular, the President of the Old Girls Association, Ms Christine Purvis. After leaving Queensland Jan moved eventually to Western Australia, where she met and married Tim Riley and raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine. She returned to study in 1982 gaining a Graduate Diploma in Library and information Studies with Distinction from W A I T and in the inid 1990s a Master of Arts degree in Archives management Jan was no stranger to archival issues in independent schools as prior to her returning

to Queensland and heriob at BGGS, she worked at both Perth College and All Saints College in Western Australia. Those who knew Jan attest to the fact that below her gentle exterior lay great strength, determination and commitment to people and causes dear to her. Many former students appreciated Jan's interest in them and what they had done since leaving School and as a result many wonderful gifts have been donated to Archives. Jan is not only sadly missed by those with whom she worked most recently, but by librari and fellow archivists throughout Australia
LADY NoswoRTHY
Lady Nosworthy, nee Kathleen Grimth (1916-2000), parent and generous supporter of BGGS, died this year. Her connections with the School were deep and long lasting extending over the period from 1960 to 2000. She was the grand niece of Sir SamuelWalker Grimth, former chairman of the Board of Trustees whose name is commemorated by Grimth House. Her husband, the late Sir John Nosworthy, also served on the Board of Trustees in the 1960s. Lady Nosworthy's daughters - Elizabeth, Susan, Christine, and Barbara - and granddaughters - Katrina and Georgin Plant and Alexandra and Jessica Moles (Jessica is currently in Year 12) - all attended the School. Among the other family members who have attended BGGS are Lady Nosworthy's niece and grand nieces. Lady Nosworthy is remembered as a wonderful mother who gave tireless and enthusiastic support to many areas of School life, particularly in the tuckshop. Her endowment of an annual award, the Sir Samuel Walker Grimth Prize, in memory of her great uncle, is to be generously continued by her daughter, Barbara Moles.
